Trips to the dentist

The recommendation is that each of us should visit the dentist at least twice a year for a "check-up" and to have our teeth cleaned. I am not fond of going to the dentist, but I used to go once or twice a year. I've never had dental insurance, and even the cleanings are very expensive. I now go on and "as needed" basis only, but they seldom have to do much tartar removal or cleaning, as I make a point to take extra good care of my teeth each day!
How many trips do you make to the dentist in the average year? If you go less frequently, do you think it does harm?

Yes I believe it is harmful to neglect your teeth, I use to hate to go to the Dentist, I do not like needles so the thought of going just drove me nuts, well now my teeth are a mess, and I am always running back in forth, not afraid of needles now, to bad its too little too late. , thanks peacefulwmn for reminding how much I screwed up my teeth lol , I was feeling really good a minute ago lol,
Right now my brother is in so much pain with his wisdom tooth, I feel so bad for him, you can see how much pain his is in whenever you look at him, he said he will go to the dentist on tuesday.

Hi Kitty. I cannot remember how many trips I had to make to the dentist after the birth of my 2nd daughter, but it was a lot! All through my pregnancy, I had craved and was always chewing a piece of bubble gum. This was before the times of sugar-free gum, so even though I brushed twice a day, ack! Cavities and more cavities. That taught me a great lesson.
LOL, now then, you go back to feeling good. I screwed up mine, too, but now it's behind me, and thus far, I DO still have all my own teeth LOL.
Hugs,
Karen

P.S. Tell your brother I wish him well. I had to have some wisdom teeth cut out, and while there wasn't a lot of pain after, I was very surprised the next morning to wake up with chipmunk cheeks! So you can foreward him lol. But again, pain was minimal.

Hi Karen!
I try my best to take care of my teeth so that the need for going to a dentist may not arise. I do not go to a dentist for routine check ups.

Hi Karen!
It is good to know that you are very disciplined about caring your teeth, hope it continues and you do not require a visit to Dentist.

Hello Deepak. It is wonderful to take such good care of your teeth that you have no need for the dentist. May it always be that way. I am scrupulous about mine, too :) I hope to keep all of them my whole life!

Between one and two, mostly when I need a tooth pulled. I don't do the whole checkup thing b/c I don't have insurance and I don't have the money to blow on it. I just take care of them myself and if they get too bad and need to be pulled, I get them pulled.

We have the same dilemma, then Twoey...no insurance and not enough money for their high fees! Well, unless it is absolutely necessary. Nothing hurts like a toothache. Ack!
I've been meaning to tell you how much I like your "signature."
So, "peace within" to you, as well, and "stand strong in your beliefs."

I go every 6 months and usually he just inspects and takes a bit of tartar of mmy bottom front teeth and that is it. I do use an electric toothbrush with a double head. I have two heads in use and use a different one each day so it has more than a day to dry out. Then I use the head dry for two minutes and only put toothpaste on after the two minutes. That seems to work okay if only I could get rid of that last bit on my bottom front teeth. I suspect the dentist just makes a show of that so I think he is doing something for the money.

Hi Angela. That is the same kind of toothbrush I use, and I think it makes a world of difference as to how clean it gets teeth! Like you, I only have that bit of tartar behind the bottom front teeth when I go. Maybe they do just make a show of it lol. Whatever they do always costs so much! I do value my teeth, though.
Thank you for your input.

Hi Jim. What you've described is the very reason my parents became so adament about us going twice a year. First time I ever went I was 4, and was screaming when one of my back teeth started hurting. I had to have it pulled, and even though it wasn't a permanent tooth, my parents felt so bad about the pain and such, that we went often after that.
Thank you for making such a good point.

Hi Yugasini. Some people in the US have the dental insurance which helps pay for the expenses of a dentist, but many, like me, do have it. The regular doctors can provide pain medicine, but do not fix teeth here. Only a dentist will do that.

I haven't been for some time now, I had a great dentist where I used to live but sadly because I had to move, I had to find another one, no disrespect to the ladies but I have had bad experiences with female dentists, and when I found a local one I went along and she was a woman and she was so damn rude, that I vowed never to go back. I am trying to find another dentist but I keep putting it off as going to the dentist is an ordeal, I do look after my teeth and they are to me healthy I know I should get them checked out but only when they start to give me problems!

Hi Wolfie. Rude professionals ARE hard to tolerate. I think if you take scrupulous care of your teeth and mouth, minimal visits are okay, but yes, as soon as you sense trouble, it is good to go to even a rude dentist rather than to start losing your teeth or getting gum disease.
