Hi friends, I am observing fasts for the first time this year during this Ramadan month. As I am not a Muslim so I do not have any background of why Ramadan is celebrated. Can you people throw some light on this that why do people celebrate Ramadan and why do people fast for one full month during Ramadan.

There are Muslims who forget the true meaning or significance of the fasting month, at least in my country. After breaking the fast they indulge themselves in many types of food and drinks. These people actually gain weight during the fasting month.

Yes even I think that even when not fasting drinking and smoking should be prohibited during this sacred month.

religious reasons
i always thougth it was to sacrifice your comfort and know that material things aren't that important...food isn't material but it may signify it

Ok so ramzan teaches us to keep away from the material things and be close to the god. Which we all should do even when it is not Ramzan but we do not do.

My children's father's family celebrates Ramadan that just started and my daughters birthday is Tuesday!! That is tricky and I hope the other kids come to the party all crabby and will try to make it fun as possible for them, any ideas? I do not celebrate Ramadan and came from a primarily christian background but I believe people should have free will to whatever religion they like if just that, its done out of free will. My mother-in-law tried to talk me into trying out Islam but I just not into that and lean on the side of spirituality. I have never treated her as anything other than a friend and I think we're pretty close for being in-laws and now she doesn't bother me. We compare differences and similarities between christianity and Islam a lot but I try to be respectful and not to bring it up in their household unless asked. Indulging at the end of Ramadan, isn't that the truth, Im glad we do not live in the same neighborhood because its like thanksgiving feast twice in one year!

Yes differences are there is all the religions and the best is to accept those differences. If you do not beleive in some religion then it is ok but atleast you should respect them. Very good thing you do that you respect Islam being a Christian.
