Does it say Question? or Discussion? When you make a post here? Why do .....

Why do people ask simple Questions here? Is this a discussion forum? I always looked at Mylot as a discussion forum! How do people expect you to give a nice thoughtful response to " How old were you when you first drove a car?" or "What is your favorite color?" Come on give me some feed back on what you think this this site is supposed to be about! Thanks tdemex

ahhh tdemex...we are becoming quick friends here and now I see why...we are on the same mental level...lol
I wonder the very same thing. How am I supposed to give an insightful or experienced thorough answer to a question like what is your favorite color...and mind you...not only do I hate it when people post these simple minded questions....I also hate the fact that most the these types of posts are REPEATED over and over again!!!! It really frustrates me and for a while it even turned me off to mylot....In the same sense...I am glad I gave it another chance here...because I have gotten the chance to meet some very worldly, intelligent and inspiring people here ;) *you included tdemex*
Anywho....I have the same gripe but like many don't know how to get mylotters (especially) our newbies to understand that mylot is indeed a DISCUSSION forum- whether we are paid for it or not!

Thanks for the flattery! I'm with you totally it's the new generation they are in a hurry and as you know it takes time to read the rules and FAQs, so why bother! If I get in to a problem I'll just beg for someone else to help me! LOL! The only good thing about this is when they do get into trouble I get to post a long response to explain things to them. But even that is getting repetitious oh well as they say "The beat goes on!" tdemex Thanks!

I thought it was just to bytch and whine on! Ohhh, here's another one I forgot POLITICAL PROPAGANDA LMAO...
I always like the "discussions" that are just a copy and paste off of a tabloid best of all. They are my favs
I don't know why other people ask simple questions but, I've asked some before because I figured someone here would know the answer---like "how to use charcoal" since, I didn't know how to use one of those types of "grills", which by the way is not grilling, it's more like slow cooking

That's just begging for me to continue! LOL But, you'd have to take pictures and they start a discussion about the last time you peed your pants. I can see it now, What were you wearing when you last peed your pants? How old were you when you last peed your pants?

I think I read a discussion about that earlier. But since I had never done it, I didn't respond to it.

Funny enough ...
I was in the pub last night, and this bloke started a conversation. Out of the blue he said: "So what was the first car YOU drove, Sue?"
Well, actually it was more like three months ago, but people often have real-life conversations that start with inane queries, and the conversation develops from there. Usually, it ends up on a completely different tangent.
Personally, I'm far more likely to respond to discussions which have a simple, but relevant point to make than to long personal tales - to which I can give no answer or input.
Every day things are just as relevant to us here as more profound issues. To me, there is little difference between: When did you learn to drive? and Do you believe there is a God? or Is Susan Boyle really Saddam Hussein in disguise?

I can see your point, I can say that I have not been on very much lately and when I do, I really have been trying to get back to the discussions that I have made and not really paid much attention to any of the newbie started discussions... I have tried to post to some of "friends started" discussions to get in a few posts a day --although life has been keeping me very busy and away from the computer...
So I have not had time to pay attention to those one liner or whats my favorite etc... discussions. I know there have been some fluff discussions (some may have been my own as well -LOL)... but then I havent had time to put thought into some of the more in depth ones --
I agree with you on the fact that this is a discussion board... and not so much a question and answer board... but I think if we keep reminding people that and keep discussions going on as they should...everyone (hopefully) will follow the lead!!!!
Happy mylotting.

Hello T. I see this as a discussion forum and have learned a lot about many things and many cultures. I DO ask questions, but not one-liners or the kind that can be answered yes or no. That would definitely discourage an actual discussion. When I DO answer someone else's one-line questions, I simply fill in few additional details as I go.

Well I'm glad you see why I posted this and I was hoping to target more offenders and make them aware of their evil ways, but according to the responses I've received I got a bunch of old timers that seem to agree with me! LOL! But I'll continue on my quest to try and stamp out this misconception they have about posting! Onward!!! Thanks! T-----

Hello my friend
I have seen this myself, its really hard to respond to something when you have no idea what the poster feels about it themself, I responded to one of those post tonight I had to read what the poster responded to another post only way I was able to understand why the question was posted, lol
Really is confusing

Well, I don't post questions like 'what do you wear at...' requiring shortest answers possible, but still many of my posts have 'simple(?)' questions in them. Like when I get stuck in some seemingly unsolvable problem related to computers..
I think that you are aiming at those types of questions as well, and maybe you will reward me with some good scoldings. But they are welcome, I need some wisely words.

This site is about discussing things, venting things, learning, teaching, etc. However, a lot of people (myself included) start off by thinking that this is a money making site (which it is, if you do it correctly by 'discussing' things.)
Maybe I´m wrong, but I´m under the impression that a lot of these one-liners are from people whith a small number to their posts. They might have just started their learning curve, and good luck to them.
You will have noticed that sometimes a star appears here, very popular, everybody likes them and interacts with them. I´ve seen some of them posting one-liners, and they get lots of responses. But that's because they build up relationships first.

That's a good take on things! But the newbies should learn the system here before they just start tossing out these posts, like what size shoe do you wear! This was the audience I tried to reach with this post! LOL! I got more responses from seasoned Mylotters than I expected! T----

Hi tdemex, I thought nobody gonna come up with this. I joined my lot actually 3 years ago but disappeared for 2 yrs. Sometimes when I login, I saw so many short "discussion" , and it's one after another basically from the same user. I would love to respond but I saw those make me lose my words too. Some people here is really-really good and creative when they post their discussion, but yes a lot probably just want to get quick adding on their earning. Anyway, I really enjoy responding in this discussion. Have a great night !

I took a break from here too, I was so busy at work and now am laid off so I'm spending more time here and notice more! Hope you have a good week ahead! Thanks for your input. tdemex

People start 'discussions' like that because they are the ones that get the most responses. When I ask a question that seems too simple I like to ask other questions in the body of the discussions to keep it from being a simple one word/sentence answer. Simple is fine as long as there are different directions to go in.

Hi tdemex, I don't like confrontation even though I have strong views and when I've posted in certain areas, my views, my opinions, they have not been debated by reasonable people but attacked by bigoted intolerant people, you may well guess I'm speaking about the topic of religion. I don't like being attacked online or anywhere else but at least with a face to face discussion it is easier. So now I keep away from there.
But sometimes I can't help myself and have just posted an opinion, not in religion, which could well inflame the US opinion, but I posted it in the middle of a topic so presumabley the later posters won't bother to read it. I had to have my say but it will not fit in with the majority view. There will be others who share my view and I hope they also post. I tried to cover myself by saying this is my opinion and I don't want to discuss it but no doubt tomorrow I will have no star. Anyway that's my reason for keeping middle of the road, because even though I love a good debate I cannot do it with people who are completely intolerant of a different view. My controversial opinion may be viewed on Antiquelady's topic of the release of the Lockerbie bomber. I could have added a lot more but didn't want to upset Aunty.

There are two areas here where there are a lot of confrontations, one is religion the other is politics! It's like a discussion not to get in with your in-laws! I like freedom and the freedom to stay away from these areas is a good choice if your a non confrontational type of person. Some people seem to thrive on this! But when I say opinion it's just that. Opinion of a recipe, car, fish, clothes....... not "what size shoe do you wear"! Your a good person here and I like your posts! Just keep being you! tdemex

It drives me nuts when people ask questions that only have one answer or a one word answer!! Seriously! Mylot is a place to START and REPLY TO DISCUSSIONS! I don't think some people realize this. It's really unfortunate because I feel like I'm seeing it more and more every day.

i think people or members do these kinds of discussions never even bother to read the rules and the guidelines, so they should be informed. best thing to do, i guess is to lead them to guidelines and guide them properly on here.

Hello,
You have put along a good question.
The purpose of inviting interesting discussions
is defeated when questions which have
only one line answers or answers which every one
is aware of. But if some questions which will
eventually lead to a chain of responses and
answers tot the response and so on are posted we can
have a very interesting discussions on the topic.
So either a discusiion or a question if it lead to
fruitful discussions and welcome outsome it is ok
Happy mylotting

I have to admit some of the question's in question's are simple. But I still think if they want me to really anwser something and give a good anwser then come up with a question that has to have more depth to it.
Of course we could always get creative with the simple anwser's, we could alway's say: my favorite color is blue, but not aqua blue. Not even midnight blue it's sort of a shade in between the 2. Yet deeper then sky blue.

Right, but that's not what the site was intended to be. At least that's my take on that. When I started here there were many choices to respond to with a thoughtful and good response, but it has changed, and I like the old way better, pretty selfish of tdemex to be that way, but there are many who agree with me, I think or I'll be heart broken! LOL! I have fun here and that is what it is all about! I've seen your input here and you do a good job here, I only wish you could have seen the old Mylot! tdemex

I wish I could have seen it back when it was like that. But the way it is now, I guess we will have to put up with it until when they all learn. Then once they do learn then we will see some quality. I am learning myself, but I learned from reading and just replying first. I saw no sense at all in posting until when I knew I was ready for it. Even now, I am still cautious when I do it, because I don't want to post the wrong thing's.

People that start a discussion and are wanting only a one word answer in here is frustrating for sure. I overall see nothing wrong with asking questions in here, but at the same time you need to be willing to talk about more than just a simple question in here only wanting a simple response back as well. Since myLot pays the best for quality over quantity they are in the long run only hurting themselves more as well.

I agree with, it seems that this kinds of discussions if you can call that seems to be increasing everyday, they are like mushrooms. So as a rule I only respond to those discussions that are intreresting and relevant to me. I hope those people who write those sort of materials will come up with something really interesting and worth discussing:) Didnt mean to offend just voicing my opinions:) Cheers!

There is a misconception here that if you start more discussion then you will earn more. Yes, you will earn more but only when you will comment back with sufficient length for every response. To earn more, here members start too much discussions. Innumerable discussions are started here daily. In this circumstances, you can not expect every discussion to be unique and analytic. Though, i have seen lots of discussion here which demands you to stretch your thought but it is out numbered by simple and silly questions.

I have repeated this over and over to the newbies I mentor here. Sometimes the light goes on and sometimes it doesn't! If only there were a way to have a probation type thing here! I wish a lot! But the reality is we should all try to teach these persons the right way to do things! It seems you got it, now spread the word! LOL! Thanks! tdemex

Oh, my I am so guilty of this..well, of course, they're some topics that has to do with asking questions first because i need other peoples story and experience while i make my own discussion. there's nothing wrong with that, isn't it.It is a discussion but there are interest that has something to do with "question and Answer portion. so, i figured, maybe i can make a discussion that also starts with a question... well, i don't just asked in on one line of sentence.

It's splitting hairs, the board says discussion, using a question to open a discussion is the way to do that but the main question is " what is the poster looking for. If it's a simple one word answer that isn't what this site was intended for! I just hope people see this post and think about what they post as they go thru the day! Thanks for your input! tdemex

Hi tdemex, You're pretty passionate about this site having fruitful discussion, yes? I totally agree with you. I would normally just respond to other's discussion and seldom start my own unless I have some issues to resolve that require more than just yes or no answers. But of late I find that many discussions are difficult to respond to as they don't interest me and they are just undiscussable (if there is such a word).

Hi, I wouldn't say passionate but I like thoughtful discussions or somewhere, where someone wants an opinion on a certain thing or situation. My first 8 months here I was employed and came here to improve my typing and spelling skills so I didn't notice as much as I do now, I haven't worked for a while and am spending more time here. This is what drove this post. Most of the older user here know what I'm talking about. I'm just hoping the people who commit these crimes will be made aware of their wrongs! LOL! That's a little harsh! But I really hope this will help some people get back on track here! Thank you and have a wonderful week ahead! tdemex
