Have you ever heard of Breakin N Enterin? No I'm not talking about the crime.I'm talking about a lost documentary on west coast hip hop especially dancing.See there has been a lot of hype with hip hop dancing coming from the east coast, but keep in mind that a lot of it started in the west. And that's where Breakin N Enterin came in.In 1983, director Topper Carrew teamed up with Adolfo Quoinones aka "Shabba Doo" to begin filming the documentary.Around this time Shabba Doo was looking for skilled street dancers to promote and expose. On this quest in the west,he came across his cast for the movie "Breakin".Basically if you have seen the movie, a heavy majority of the star dancers got their start on Breakin N Enterin. Also west coast rapper Ice T got his start as a dancer and a rapper on Breakin N Enterin. The documentary itself features dancers such as Boogaloo Shrimp,Shabba Doo,twins Heckle and Jeckle,Lollipop,Hugo aka Mr. Smooth, and Poppin Taco just to name a few.Now this was after the west coast and east coast exchanged knowledge on both breakin and poppin.Poppin in the film featured a lot of animation, waving, gliding, robot, tutting and cobra styles.Shabba Doo was getting major exposure prior to filming the documentary and he felt that it was time for the west coast to get their credit for Hip Hop.
I respect this documentary as it introduced poppin the right way. When I say the right way, I mean separating it from breakdancing as a dance of it's own. Also Shabba Doo took time to acknowledge Oakland as the birthplace for poppin.Another thing I want to point out is that the film breaks down some history on Boogaloo Shrimp.Shrimp in my opinion has got to be the highlight of it.I like all the other dancers in the film, but shrimp has that animated character showmanship.Anyway you can view this film one of 2 ways. The first way is that you can order online. The second way is by checking it out on youtube.Just type in Breakin N Enterin in the searchbar. It is certainly a must see if u are a hip hop or dance fan.
