Pregnant and always sleepy. Can I fight it?

I'm pregnant with my second baby and like the first one, I'm always sleepy. I consider myself quite lucky since I'm not experiencing morning sickness at all. My only problem is I feel like I'm always, always sleepy. I stopped drinking coffee since I found out I was pregnant again, so it's harder not to feel sleepy now. Any tips on how to stay awake during the day? Coffee and other caffeine products are out of the question. Thanks!

Hi rakittera, This is normal and can be happen to anyone. What you need to do is precaution. Do not eat much of spicy food during pregnancy. Lemony smell might make you feel better, so opt for light lemony juices or fruits. Avoid sitting continuously for a long time at any place. Walk slowly with careful movements. While sleeping, you can keep a pillow at your hips for a comforting feel. If you’re sleepy during the day, take a nap, and try to go to bed earlier at night. Don’t feel guilty! If you’re tired it’s because your body needs sleep. If you have trouble sleeping, try drinking a non-caffeinated tea, or reading before bed (or anything that relaxes you and slows your thoughts.) If you love baths with candlelight, than give that a try! If you can manage it, try to get around 9-10 hours of sleep per night. I hope this will help you a lot. Thanks and congrats..

Thanks for the tips! Why should I avoid spicy food? Does this make us sleepy?

Hi! Well, I am pregnant with my second one as well, so I completely understand your situation. However, I do not have to go to work, I stay home taking care of my 15 month old, which is a job in itself! Except for when she naps, if I am that tired that is the only time I have for extra sleep. Without adding caffeine back into your daily routine, the best advice that I have found is to get some exercise. There are pregnancy workout videos that you can do, most of which are only half hour long, so you could wake up half hour early to do them 3-4 days per week, or do them an hour or so before bed time. You can also take walks of 20-30 minutes 3-4 times per week(or more if you're up to it, just don't overdo it). Also, since you can't nap during the day, definitely get to bed at least half hour to hour earlier than you normally do. There may be things that get neglected around the house, but your body is working very hard creating life, and needs the rest more than the vacuuming needs to be done! That is one of the hardest things for me to realize sometimes, but it is so true! The extra sleep at night will help you to feel a lot better, and make up for the extra wakings to the bathroom:) Good luck! I hope you start feeling less tired soon! And, congratulations on your soon to be little one!

Congratulations on your pregnancy as well! Wow! Taking care of a 15-month old is a handful. I'm lucky that my 20 month old has a nanny and I could rest whenever I need to. Actually, I was on a strict fitness regimen before I got pregnant. I go to the gym 5 times a week and do 2 hours of exercise. Now that I'm pregnant, I decided to take it slow and just go to the gym 3 times a week with only an hour of light to moderate exercise. However, I can only do this after work hours and it is the afternoon sleepiness that I need to avoid because it is the time that I should be working on my job. But maybe you're right, I should sleep longer at night. Thanks and good luck on your pregnancy.

I would say let yourself sleep. Are you working? If you're not then there's no problem in taking more rest now since you're going to have baby. Maybe you can have your mother or mother-in-law come over and take care of you. That's what my grandmother did when my aunt was pregnant

Unfortunately, I have a regular day job and I can't afford to take as much rest as I would want to. This is why I need tips on how to stay awake. Thanks!

Find some sort of physical activity that involves you to be on your feet. I always found if I sat down for more than a lil bit I got really sleepy. I used to fall asleep at work when I was pregnant with my first. It was always after lunch too I just could not stay awake sitting @ my lil desk.

Yeah. I'm only in my first month and I found myself taking a nap on my desk twice last week already. You're right, after lunch is the worst. Maybe I'll try to take small walks. Thanks!

Your body is going thru a big change and that is one reason why you are staying sleepy. When you feel that sleep feeling coming on,just get up and move around a little. I know this may sound kind of silly but I would live the making of my bed to when those sleepy times. I then would go make the bed up which in return got some blood flowing to rid the sleepy feeling. Now don't crawl into that bed.

Thanks! I'm not going anywhere near my bed because I'm at work most of my waking hours. But I still feel sooo sleepy even if I'm up on my feet. Thanks for sharing!

Wow you definitely sound a lot like me. I wasn't too sick or anything with my two kids, I was only a few times, but I definitely was tired almost all the time, and I even fell asleep at work numerous times... EEK! My doctor allowed me to drink caffeine, but limited amounts, but since they are out of the question for ya, umm... Do you over exert yourself at all? I think that if you have time, definitely try to sleep, because I never was able to, and it made me feel way worse because of it. Otherwise, I am not sure what else to tell ya girl.

I understand. But it seems we have exactly the same situation. Aside from having a regular day job, I have a very active toddler to go home to. So, as much as I would want to get more rest, I couldn't. I only find myself not sleepy whenever I eat, and I really am trying to control my food intake since I do not want to gain more than the average weight gain of 25-35 pounds during pregnancy. I was at the gym last night and even a little dancing did not stop me from yawning! It's crazy! Anyway, thanks for sharing. I'm glad to hear from someone who actually understands what I'm going through because she has experienced it herself.

Try doing some light works, or listening to the music, you can also read some good books to avoid sleeping, you can also go for a walk without exerting yourself much, avoid watching the television as you may tend to feel sleepy more then.

I seem to get more sleepy when I listen to music and I'm not much of a reader. Taking short walks seems like a good idea though. Thanks!
