"xposure to daylight could help control obesity: Study
Sat, Aug 22 04:26 PM
London, Aug 22 (PTI) Exposure to sunlight might be the answer to weight problems during winter months, according to a new British research, which might lead to new treatments for the prevention or reversal of obesity. Researchers from the University of Nottingham have found exposure to daylight could promote Brown adipose tissue (BAT) function, more common in females, leading to new ways of preventing obesity.
BAT brown fat''s primary function is to generate body heat to keep one from shivering. It is capable of producing up to 300 times more heat per unit mass compared with all other tissues.
Therefore, promoting BAT function could prevent or reduce obesity in some people, the researchers said. The new study, led by Michael Symonds, Professor of Developmental Physiology at the university, has shown for the first time that daylight is a major factor in controlling BAT activity.
"Our research has suggested a previously unknown mechanism for controlling BAT function in humans and this could potentially lead to new treatments for the prevention or reversal of obesity," said Professor Symonds. The body''s requirements for BAT has been reduced in recent times by central heating plus global warming.
The presence of BAT was documented and correlated in studied over 3500 patients with monthly changes in daylight and ambient temperature. Their results showed that BAT was more common in females and that changes in BAT activity were more closely
associated with day light."
May God bless You and have a great time.

Hello my friend. What interesting news. Sunlight in the winter time where I live is much less than in summer months (northern USA). I knew that the loss of daylight hours and sunlight during the winter here can lead to a form of depression called SAD, but I had not heard the link it may have to obesity.
This is good information to have, so thank you.

Hello my friend PeacefulWmn9 Ji,
So nice of you for accepting research work so easily. I still feel eating habits and diet control plays an important factor on anyone's obisity. I think under winter and cold atmosphere people tend to eat more and thereby prone to obisity Exposure to sunlight may provide an extra push to help reduce. So let' make few observations. Let's wait and watch.
May God bless You and have a great time.

Yes, this research is something to add to good eating and exercise habits, and we'll follow to see how much or little it helps. As my mom, says: moderation in all things.
I think balance of many things in life adds greatly to our overall health, including what we weigh.
Blessings to you...

i am aware also that if you intake at least 4000 iu of d3 daily this will help with weight and mood stalblization. it helps if you take calcium and magnesium citrate with the d3 they work together.
try and get sun as well, using sunblock prevents the the skin from absorbing the d.
becareful with your d3 intake it is not water soluable and can be toxic so you do not want to exceed a safe level. speak to any owner at a health food store they should be able to help you with this and advise you on this matter.

thank you for your kind words.
i also think an active life will help with weight loss, maybe the extra gain in the winter months is due to the activity levels tapering off, due to the cold.
also if you diet in the winter months to try and control your weight w/o exercise your body will think it is being starved so all calories you intake are stored as fat, you will end up gaining weight on a diet.(this is if you just eat enough to keep you going you know the starvation diet.)
in america we intake alot of trans fats they are very bad and we eat alot of sugar also very bad, i read an article the other day that ea. american eats on average 24 tablespoons of sugar a day! that is horrible.

Hello my friend GRAYORBES Ji,
While in US in 2003, what I commonaly observed in America with regards to food habits, they eat everywhere like Office, while walking on the roads as well. So the dust-bins rae provided everywhere. We restrict eating at proper places and venues. May god bless You and have a great time.

Maybe the BAT function is activated by exposure to sunlight. In a simplified scenario, an exposure means being outdoors. Therefore there is exposure to the outside climate. Most probably there is also a correlation between ambient temperature and the intensity of BAT activity. This could explain a high obesity rate in sunny, warm or areas.

Hello my friend rosdimy Ji,
So nice of you for your free and frank opinion. It is still at research stage. As research advances, it will have more set-backs and people will have new ideas. Simply exposing to sun may not all help a person. One may have to make dietry controls as well.
May God bless You and have a great time.

hmm. I guess that means that people in cold climates are more obese than people in warm climates? But I heard that in the USA the state with the most obese people in it was Mississippi, which is very warm. And the American South, which is very warm, overall, has more obesity due to the types of foods southern people tend to eat (or so I've read and seen on the news) and there is quite a bit of sun down there. So I am kind of skeptical. I suppose there could be some truth to it, in some cases, but I think there are other factors that are more important

I agree with you--more information is necessary. In Mississippi, I do believe it has to do with how food is prepared more than the amount of sunlight they're exposed to. The further north you go, the shorter the days get during the winter, limiting people to the amount of OUTDOOR activity you get more than anything.

I think it is true if you would just consider sunlight and not other factors contributing to obesity. But if you would put all these factors together, exposure to sunlight alone would not help one lose weight if one would not also have discipline in eating habits, exercising, etc.

And i thought it was exposure to sunlight in the mid noon or afternoon, my told me it would cause you cancer in the skin exposing too much in the sun. i guess this gives me a very good reason to simply do warm up exercises in the morning, before i can either stroll to use the treadmill.

Funny, the sunlight only affects my mood. I think that people are overall more active when the days are longer. In the US, the holidays that most people eat a lot of high sugar foods is in the winter, and that's when they tend to pack on the pounds. Additionally, people are wearing clothes to hide in (bulky and thick). I know that I can't physically function at times when the weather is extremely cold--I don't have much of that insulation layer (fat) anyway.

Hello my friend sanjana_aslam Ji,
So nice of your views, which are totally different. It amounts to exposure in winter season, and these are all research stage only. We have to see, what happens to people working outside in hot sun during winter, keeping other dietry control normal. May God bless You and have a great time.

Light does have something to do with the chemicals in the body. Have you heard that the farmer keep the hens well lighted so that they lay more eggs. Grey colors and cloudy weather lead to low and dim mood, so lack of spirit to move about. If the diet is not healthy, the result is for sure obesity. Mere sunlight does not help, but sunlight and activities, with healthy diet, is sure to do us good. Thanks for the information.
