How did you choose your first home?

August 24, 2009 2:08pm CST
Having just been informed that I actually can move out without my father losing this house I have decided to look into finding a property to rent somewhere in the UK. Since this whole experience is something new for me - I wouldn't let myself think seriously about this before I knew I could do it - I am looking for advice from mylotters about how you knew which house was for you and how you set about finding your first house in the first place? In short I just want to know anything you can tell me about how you found your first home so I can use the experiences to make sure I do this the right way and have as few regrets as possible later :) I am sort of hoping that whenever I see the 'right' house I will just know it on a spiritual level, but I am not entirely convinced it will work like that! I am currently also using the Internet to search because the houses I am thinking about aren't in my local area and so this seems like the most sensible way to do things, even if viewing them later could become a problem lol Oh well, many thanks for you time, help and responses, Dranz

Well, I think I can share what I wish I had looked for, and this is in relation to India. First - the building should be at a reasonable height from road. This is because during rains, the water can enter the house. Next, look for roof leakages. Again rainy seasons can be a problem. Third is drainage and fourth is electricity. U need to check whether there are any problems regarding these. I believe u all have gas connection in ur homes. Then u have to check whether everything is in order relating to that as well. As to the house, u need adequate ventilation. The more natural light u get, the better it is. The doors and windows should not give any problem in closing. Water connection should work well, u shouldnt have to bring water up from anywhere. Parking is another problem. And waste disposal arrangement. If this is too close to ur home, u will have lot of cockroaches and ants, not to mention other insects. In general, these are the few points I could come up with in relation to the house u r planning to take on rent. U should also know whether the neighbors are alright. Ur landlords are nice people. Hope u find the right accommodation. Best of luck.

Hi Vandana, In the UK there are housing surveys which are carried out and look for the structural aspects of having a house. They cover things like subsidence, mould, anything structurally wrong and stuff. We have to pay for that though which I don't like as it is expensive . The neighbour thing is the main one I am looking at, and the local area as well. The neighbours here are nice now, but when we first moved I completely hated them, so that went to the top of my list lol. Don't think we have to worry about waste disposal, again the UK is pretty good with that, though get ants anyway. We had those in the past as well, though thankfully we haven't had cockroaches lol! When you write that you wished you had looked for this, does it mean you have a house with all the bad things you listed here? I hope not . Many thanks for the response, Dranz

Hi Dranz, yes! I mean exactly that. :( I didnt know a site like mylot existed then. And in all probability it didnt. So I didnt have anybody guiding me. Well, UK does seem to have a whole lot better system. Here if we do point at mold, people say whaaat? Is that a reason??? And generally, these are not really harmful. So it is never taken seriously by anybody. Rats, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and like are our problems. :) Our problems are further aggravated because we follow something called vaastu. Entrance should be in North East, Kitchen in South East, Drain in North West, and Master Bedroom in South West. So once the quadrant is fixed, u squeeze in toilets somewhere. LOL. Definitely not in North Eastern part. Thanks a lot for best response Dranz. I am sure u and me can be real good friends. I could send u some jokes and lovely forwards that I have recd. I dont know if we are allowed to do that in PM. Do let me know. :) I seem to still wary of mylot rules. :) I will still try today. Let me know what u think thru PM. Have a nice day. :)

Hi Vandana, Wow India sounds like such a regulated country, that is amazing. Is the location of the things in the house (many apologies I forgot the name) for religious reasons? Like the Japanese have feng shui or something where certain things in certain places mean luck and stuff? I am fascinated about this now, I don't know much about India, if anything really so I welcome anything you can tell me. The UK is pretty good with housing I guess, though it is expensive. Dad mentioned that those surveys cost like £400 which seems like an awful lot of money, though I guess if it warns you the house is about the collapse it could be useful! How do you buy a house in India, do you talk to the owner yourself, or do you have to go through lawyers and estate agents like we do here? All the best, and once again, many thanks for the jokes yesterday Dranz

Hi fglswh, Houses here are looking really expensive as well. I was really ready to move out when I started this discussion, but in the month since I have done the research and been completely put off the idea until I have a stable job. There are so many hidden costs even before you get to the house. Paying for agents, lawyers (why the heck do we need lawyers ), and then everything else. Way too much. Not sure what the average price is though, I think I was looking at the 350-500 rent per month, so houses would probably be £60,000-100,000. I will definitely have to rent, I could never afford that price Do you like the house you found? Many thank for the response, Dranz
