I am about to sit down and work with my son with his flashcards and workbooks. We have flashcards that are shapes and colors, alphabet, and numbers. We have several different workbooks but they one we are working on right now is teaching him to write his letters. Then he has a coloring book that he colors 2 pages in each day. So do you work with your children or did you when they were younger with flashcards and/or workbooks? My son really enjoys it and I like helping him with it too.

Yes, I do. For my son, I introduced the Sesame Street Alphabet flashcards when he was a few months away before he turn a year old. He simply loved it. And those cards helped a lot because now that he's in preschool, singing or reciting the aplhabet is just a breeze for him.
We also went through Shapes and Color Flashcards. He even has Action flashcards. It shows what walking, running, jumping, etc looks like. He likes these flashcards, too. Because not only do I just show it to him, he imitates whatever action is being shown.
He also have several workbooks and coloring books. A few months ago, he was into very large coloring books. He loved to color the characters of Dora the Explorer, Sesame Street, Diego the Explorer.
But now that he's almost 6 years old, he likes to draw anything he can think of. The object he particularly likes is a tricycle. One of the main transportations being used here in our country, the Philippines.
I have included a photo of one of his drawings and what a tricycle looks like.

Thanks. I am very proud of his drawings. He may be struggling with his language delay but he has talent.

i used to use flash cards, not that it helped much at times. my son has a speech problem, so that made using them harder, but he's improved heaps in his reading and doing sight words.
currently having trouble on getting him to do homework, his father isn't helping in that area. just making things worse.

My cousin had some speech problems when she was younger so they had to use site word cards with her too. I'm glad he's improved on his reading and site words. Hope he starts doing better with his homework.

The site cards they used with my cousin were provided by her school.

That's how I grew up using flashcards and work books. However, the general shift now is that workbooks and coloring books and flashcards really aren't useful in teaching young children anything. Many educational companies are making a huge profit from them of course, but they're really not developmentally appropriate.

They are very useful in helping my son because he is learning a lot.

i have used flash cards for math and for telling time and they have been somewhat helpful. i find that thoroughly explaining things works better and showing someone how to do something. once they have the basic knowledge them the flashcards can help to commit things to memory but they are merely a tool in the learning process.

I haven't used those types of flashcards yet as my son is still only 3 years old. So we just use the basic flashcards right now but he's learning a lot from them.

Yes. We still use them. Their school also has a website with links to learning material that the parents can use. I still have some of their old books from the grades before and will review with them just so they don't forget or we play school and give them one of the work sheets to do as practice.

Some kids love to play school and they don't really know they are learning by you giving them the worksheets. They just think it's fun. Good idea.

Hi sweetgirl, when my son was just a baby I made hundreds of flash cards by glueing pictures from travel brochures and other things on to pieces of card, and writing the word underneath. When he began to talk he could recognise all sorts of things from a picture of Einstein to the Statue of Liberty. He used to love them but was never interested in colouring books.

That's a good idea to make flashcards using pictures from magazines and brochures and such.

I used both with all of my children. I found it helped them when they started school and even after. It can not only help with basics but I also had flashcards with words on them and it helped them learn to read. There are all kinds of free pages and cards you can print out from the net that are really good also.

That's good. I use them with him so he will be ready for school. The cards and workbooks I bought were from Target and the dollar store. I have printed pages out and used with him before as well.

Flashcards and worksheets are a big thing at my house, not only have I taught all my children with them but I also teach English at home. I love flashcards. The younger kids that I teach really remember things so quickly with the cards.
Also because I am raising my kids in a non English speaking country I havefound that using cards with the basic sight words has really helped my kids to read. With those cards I have mde different games, after playing the games the kids have to copy the words into a notebook, at 1st grade about 10 a day. Doing this consistenly has really helped.
I use flashcards for myself as well. I want to be able to read a few of the Japanese kanji (Chinese characters) and have found the best way to memorise is to use flashcards!

I agree...flashcards are a good way to learn because you see the same things over and over and then you start to learn them after a while. He is doing really good with them.
