How important are categories to you?

It seems as tho a lot of our thinking is categorical in nature..black/white, male/female, gay/straight and such and so on. (If I may use Mylot as a reference point), in a world where there's so much discussion and pursuit of individual rights and freedoms, just how important are categorical notions to you? And, if you will, do you see yourself more as an individual or a member of a category? What about others?
Thnx..ENJOY!

I definitely see myself as more of an individual than a member of a category most of the time. However, with the current political atmosphere, I categorize myself somewhat, in what I am NOT, rather than what I am.
Categories can sometimes be handy in understanding a situation or a person quickly, but can also be rather superficial, in that there's not always a lot of depth of understanding.

Thank you..I tend to do that too! I think of me as me who isn't one of them. Sometimes that's simpler than a long explanation that's folks don't want to be bothered with anyway..ENJOY!

Well, as Aristotle pointed out categories are necessary for rational thought. Understanding the limits of categorisation is also important.
