Bothered by flies?

I recently came across the following posting on another forum:
We went with some out of town friends to Sweety Pies on Sunday for breakfast,
and we sat in the enclosed patio section beside the house. We happened to notice
a couple of zip lock baggies pinned to a post and a wall. The bags were half
filled with water, each contained 4 pennies, and they were zipped shut.
Naturally we were curious! Ms Sweety told us that these baggies kept the flies
away! So naturally we were even more curious! We actually watched some flies
come in the open window, stand around on the window sill, and then fly out again
And there were no flies in the eating area!
I was helping a friend clean up her deck today and there were wasps and flies buzzing around, so I thought, what the heck, and filled a couple baggies with water and pennies and put them in the area. And the flies and wasps left us alone! Really.
Has anybody else heard of this or tried it?

Hey Barbara! I have never heard this before! I sure will be
willing to try it if it keeps flies and wasps away! Heck, I
will try anything if it keeps anything away! I would love
to know if it would keep mosquitos away! My boyfriend and I
sat outside for just a little while a week ago and I brought
out a regular candle since I didn't have a citronella candle
and I got bitten so badly! I am allergic to mosquitos and
I have been scratching for over a week now! I will try anything
if it works!

I don't know about mosquitoes, but it's worth a shot. Let me know if it works.

I have never heard of this but dieing to know what it is that causes the flies to leave - wonder if it works for mesiqutoes? Going to have to try this one out, always looking for 'natural' pest control :)
Are the bags zipped closed?

Yes, the baggies are zipped closed.
Since water reflects light, and flies have multi-faceted eyes, my guess is it confuses them into thinking there's a predator nearby... not sure what the pennies are for or why simply just swatting at flies doesn't keep them away.
