If you only had $1 to eat with a day what would you eat? And nooo I'm not talking about getting the food in bulk and averaging it out to $1 a day -- I'm talking about if you were only supplied ONE crinkly old dollar a day to eat with for the ENTIRE day. What would you eat? I have a few things in mind but will hold off as not to give anyone any easy ideas; I will share my opinions as this thread goes along. Ok hope your stomach is growling because right now I'm giving you your first $1 for a whole day to eat so use it wisely

Well, for breakfast it would have to be eggs (is there somewhere that you can get eggs from individually?). For lunch I would get a pack of Ramen Noodles (15 cents a package here right now). Dinner is soup beans soaked and then boiled until tender. Don't have enough money for the ham to flavor them though. It would be sustenance.

No I don't know if eggs are sold individually. At least I've never seen them here in the US.

I believe if you go private you can easily get eggs individually, though it isnt exactly the cheapest food around but it is good in proteins...

with 1$ we can survive in this part of world a day. I will buy say 250 gms of rice. It will be enough for me for a day. two eggs, a carrot, few beans, 100 gms onion, a half pound bread. Then will take bread with one egg for breakfast,. will make veg fried rice with rice, vegetables and the remaining egg. it will suffice for lunch and dinner. In evening i will still have some money to buy a small cake or few biscuits.

Hold on let me clear things up.. I mean $1 a day in your own currency not $1 US. So could you still survive with that measly buck in your own currency??

Hello Subha, I agree with you, there is no way we can get a food with 2 cents. In fact, this is an interesting discussion.
Multimastery, maybe you should stated clearly before you post the discussion. Evry one here think of $1 callenge is in US dollar.

the only way I know how to each cheapest to buy in bulk. Having to buy food a dollar a time is very uneconomical. Something like spaghetti that you can buy for a dollar a package or cheap spaghetti sauce for a dollar jar to keep meeting all day for a couple of days unfortunately by your rules I would have to save up for two days.
Nope, cannot do that.

We're just sticking to $1US now because when I started discussion I didn't think about all the currencies out there. So $1US should help you scrape by for the day
(Anyone else posting we're sticking with $1US to keep things simple)

I think the only way you could sustain yourself on a dollar a day is to forage for wild foods. You would have to harvest berries, mushrooms, and nuts you could find. Also you could snare some pigeons and if you had some equipment maybe the odd fish. Greens during the summer could include dandelion greens, shepherds purse, etc.. Foraging for acorns and leeching them could feed you for days.

did you not see what i wrote above? i thought i made it clear i even had the ratio of $1 (one US dollar) to our money here which is Philippine peso.
we use US dollars here to spend, we change them to our currency first, if you get what i mean before we can buy anything here.
my post was really simple if you had seen the exchange ratio...

Hello Multimastert, this is an interesting discussion! Okay, I have think of what to eat with only $1 in my hand. $1 equal to RM3.50 in my country currency, which is Ringgit. First of all I will use $0.60 to buy a loaf of white bread, it is my favorite food too. So my breakfast and lunch is based on this loaf of bread, should be keeping my tummy full as they are many pieces of bread in a loaf of bread. For dinner, I would go to the super market to have some free taste food and beverage. The super market near my place always has free taste on certain new arrival food or some food on promotion so they will have free taste for customers. After that, I will use my balance of money, to buy a pack of instant noodles. Happy Mylotting!

Wow I see this noodle thing is popular in this thread, mixing with the bread you'd be filled with that's for sure. As far as the supermarket stops goes I have connects and would make sure they're Closed when you get there coz you can't have any help in this $1 a Day Challenge

You just made me think about something needed here at MyLot. I just realized that there is no way to edit discussions here. That would be a useful feature to have; it's in every other forum I'm a member of.
But yeah we'll keep it no help, that would get too easy for some people for this challenge. But you're still allowed to get Free Smells out the supermarket tho. I read somewhere that if you smell food and imagine eating it could possible make you full. Mind over matter hmmm

Hello multimastery. If I only had one dollar to eat with a day, I would not have much choice, but cook porridge noodles with some cheap vegetables for my meals. It would be very difficult to live on like this for a long time. For one day it is ok though. Take care.

Hi multimastery! I think that this is one of the most interesting
discussions that I have seen in a very long time and I want to
commend you on it! I live in the USA, in NYS to be exact and
a $1 a day would really be difficult to live on! I could
buy a pack of Ramen noodles and a roll or a package of
mac and cheese, store brand and a roll or something to
that extent! I would have to drink tap water or choke! I
would really have a terrible time doing this for too long
since mac and cheese makes me sick and I wouldn't have the
money to buy the milk for it anyway!

Thanks for responding Opal glad you're enjoying this discussion. I actually like mac & cheese but too much of it would make me sick too. And I see you're on the Ramen noodle deal too like many of us in this thread
P.S. I tried making mac & cheese with water and actually it wasn't that bad

Most candy bars in my area are about a dollar these days, so with tax that wouldn't fit my $1 a day budget. How much are candy bars in your area?

Scary situation, starving situation. But I guess I'm going through such a situation currently. I'm a Muslim and currently according to the Islamic calendar it is the month of Ramdhan (pronounced Ramzaan) and we Muslims practice fasting all 30 days of this month.
So I'm currently fasting or practicing Roza in which I have only one principal meal a day.
So if I am offered 1$ a day for my meals, I would have 3 eggs with 5 slices of brown bread, honey and 1 glass of milk.

Hi dbabcook peanuts are good but I think I'd stick with that crunchy peanut butter, easier to consume and more filling in my opinion. And that bag of candy might come in handy to curve appetite. Thanks for sharing!

So one dollar here would be 5 kunas. Simple i would go and buy 4 small ''bread pieces'' (really don't know how to translate that) i would rashen it through the course of the day...one every 6-8 hours and i would drink plenty of water...we have public taps around the city near sport fields. It would be a hard existance but i think you would survive

Do you think you could survive for 7 days like that? I might but I'd be super weak that's for sure! Sad thing is that some people really have to live like this.

well. if just cooking at home 1$ is enough to buy some vegetables and rice already. but if eat outside and that's really the headache to eat only 1$ for a whole day.
here nothing even cheaper than the baozi and that cost around 10cents per baozi and i think i will buy 10 baozi and eat them.

good thing you reverted to US$ 1 a day. i am sure the Chinese and Japanese will be happy with that. LOL. well in this part of the world, specially in smaller cities you can actually have a treat with such an amount. street food is quite popular and cheap here (so you don't have to cook) and if one prefers to rely on noodles then you can also add a coke to your diet.

To be honest, I probably won't eat anything at all. I'm really religion, and my friends call me nice and stuff like that, but if I had a chance, to help others, then I would do it. One dollar to give to a homeless family means the world to them then the food for me in one day. The homeless family can but grams of rice for 1 day and I have to sacrifice one day's worth of food. Some of you MyLotters think that I'm stupid and or crazy, but honestly, if I had a small chance to help someone else with their lives, I would certainly do it, and pray to God to help me survive my starvation.

Hello.I like your friend. You have raised a very interesting a good question.Yes.If only one dollar a day. What should we eat..So first of all want to eat what food is cheap and can..I have the time at school. The teachers have to teach,"I want to I can to"a class, the students created a simulation of consumption.U.S.dollars should first use this day to have enough food to buy then. Then the remaining money to buy water to drink.Ha ha..I like how the practice?

Eating on one dollar a day in the America is really a challenge. The only way to do it would be to shop around for hours for the buy of the day. If you say one can get no help, the only logical answer is look too see what grows around you and learn what can be eaten. That is what happened before we had dollars. If you must live off what you can buy for one dollar every day, it will not be much in the USA.

You're right it would be rough! I just found out a tiny snickers bar is $1 now here in America. I haven't had one in a long time so that shocked me. Just goes to show you about inflation and how the value of the US dollar is dropping fast!!! Maybe I should start investing in Gold or something.
