Recession and the increase of student applicants? Problem for new students?

Hey, i am going to be a new student at the university of waikato in Hamilton; New Zealand. There have been many issues in the papers for students about the increase of applicants of adults. This leaves less space for school-leavers and under 20's (in my country). Does anyone else feel concerned about the minority of students who do have trouble in school and only just got the requirements for university entrance? Or am I the only one who cares. If So, what do you think Universities could do to compensate for the thousands of school leavers who cant get in?
