Hello, I'm a English learner, and the sentences below confused me, would you please translate them in a easier-understanding way? Thank you~
1.There is no such thing as magic.
2.But if by the beginning of the 1920s America was the world leader in film production, it was not then---nor has it been since---in the lead when comes to deleloping film as an art form.

Sure, I can help you out! I can't help you out with the second one since I haven't lived in the 1920's and I don't really understand what they are trying to say.
When people saying, "There is no such thing as magic", only some people believe that. People usually say something like this when they are upset. Because with magic everything can be fixed, because it's magic, right? What they are saying is there problem will never be able to get resolved, because you need magic to make everything alright, and since there is no such thing as magic, you are kind of scr*wed.
I hope you understand that. If not, I'm sorry but I tried my best to explain. I'm sure other posters will have a way to explain it. =)
