The only legit ways are to see if Microsoft will give you one or to buy an actual copy of XP. There are also programs which can pull the license key for your installed programs. The reformat would have erased your key from your version of XP so most likely that will not help. Otherwise there are less than legal and more dangerous, computer will need protection, to get one but you risk MS seeing it is the wrong key during an update which will freeze your computer.

It is better to obtain the original version of the OS along with the license key from the microsoft itself.Else if you want the unautheticated key, you should avoid one specific update from microsoft "Genuine windows validation update". Else your system will not work properly though validation patch files are available for that.Also we may not able to receive important update for our operating system from microsoft. Call Microsoft and see if they can help you. I know that I have had to do that several times and the last time my codes would no longer work. I had to call them to get a new code so that I could get rid of that annoying message about how much time I have left before I need to register it or what ever. For me it was a very simple process and it was all automated. Give it a try let them know that the situation is and they might be able to help you. Good day magickat, You should try to use a legit installer of XP, it will just make you some problems. And I know Microsoft will detect that you use your friends disc.
