Is is right for a teacher to spring a 4000 word paper on students for a final?

I was taking finals last week at my school. One of my teachers came in to class with a stack of papers and passed it out. To all of our astonishment it was a 2 part project that required us to research and write a paper that would come out to be 4000 words or more. The whole time the class complained. I even had my fair share of cuss words. I just wonder if anyone else has had that happen or how you think about a final being a paper. Now keep this in mind that this is not a regular college and I'm not in grad school this is for my bachelors and I go to ITT Technical Institute.

Wow! That seems a little much to me. Especially if they just gave it to you like before the final and it wasn't included in the class syllibus or anything! That's more like a semster long project more than a final. Surely there is someone to file a complaint with!

I think if the work is relevant to the subject then all is fair. How much time do you have to do it? Research papers are not hard to write at all. Especially if you have at least a week. I use to have to do a 2500 or more word research paper every month. Personally I would rather write a paper than take an exam in most cases.
