Why would you say nobody knows where Belgium is?
I could name s bunch of cities only if I think about the Belgium Football League (the Jupiler League, if I remember correctly): Gent, Genk, Charleroi, Brussels (not Anderlecht ), etc... I rememer names of very good players like Enzo Scifo or Michel Preud'Homme (I hope I spelled it correctly).
I know the capital city is Brussels, where the European Parliament is at, and that the country is a monarchy, and that there are two major communities - the Walloon and the Flemish - and the main languages spoken are the Dutch and the French.
I know the Belgian chocolate is renowned and cycling is very popular (I remember the Liege-Bastogne-Liege race, and the name that pops into my head is Tom Boonen).
I promise I didn't look any of that up on Wikipedia...
You shouldn't feel frustrated that many Americans don't know where Belgium is - you should be happy people of poorer countries, like Romania - my country, know some of the basic things about Belgium. I think much more people have heard about Belgium than those who've heard about Romania.

Let's not shortchange Romania while we're praising Belgium. After all, Romania gave the world Hagi...an amazing gift! One of the reasons I became a soccer fan is because I watched Romania's run in the 1994 World Cup. I still remember Raducioiu, Dumitrescu, but most of all Hagi, the most exciting player of the tournament! Romania has a long history in tennis and gymnastics as well. I was a fan of Irina Spirlea and Andrei Pavel...Nastase is way before my time.

Hello, echomonster!
I recognize the values of my country and I wouldn't change them for anything in the World! I love my country (with all its faults and filths) and I am proud to be born here.
I just wanted to tell weaponmen not to expect everyone to know thinks about Belgium, but he should also know that there are other countries less known worldwide than Belgium.
And there's another think I'd like to say... We shouldn't generalize and say American or Romanian people know or not where a country or another is. There are people that know and people that don't in every country. It's not the country that gives this quality to its citizens, every individual has its own baggage of knowledge. You, echomonster are the best example - the general impression in my country is that Americans don't know much about this part of the world... You proved us wrong!

Yes,Vasile, you're right.Fewer people know about Romania than Belgium, but I guess most European nations aren't well known.I'm also a Romanian and I know about Belgium, especially because of Brussels. All of my respect to this country and to every American that knows something about good old Europe:)

I think tennis fans know where Belgium is very well. After all, two of the better female players in recent memory, Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters, came from your country. I know Kim's husband is American -- I wonder if he knew where Belgium was until he started playing basketball there? It'll be interesting to see if Clijsters' comeback is successful. She's young enough to have a good chance. Another Belgian Americans are often familiar with is the artist Hergé. Although a fictional character, Hercule Poirot (Agatha Christie detective) is also well-known here.
