My second son is now 3 weeks old. He failed his first hearing test on both ears, and failed his second yesterday. I have to say I am quite worried. There is a lot of hearing problems on my boyfriends side of the family every generation has some sort of hearing problem. I have so many questions to ask and not enough people or sources to get them answered. I feel so unsure about things I thought I knew everything about. My first son is in all ways perfect, as is my second, but I feel as if my second son is so much more fragile than my first was. I think this is becuase of the potential of him actually being deaf. The fears I have keep my awake at night, and occupy my mind all throughout the day. I am finding it hard to concentrate on work and school, and really anything else but my youngest. I hate this for the simple fact of how my childhood was being the oldest. Once my sister was born it was almost like I dissapeared to my mother and her father, I didn't want that to happen to my oldest, and I am trying all my might to make sure it doesn't, but I just feel like if I even leave my youngest sons side he'll break. I hate the feeling I have in the pit of my stomach, I hate just sitting here helpless to help him at all. What would you do if your child had hearing problems....if they do how is their life different if at all, how did you handle all the tests they had to go through, and if they had to have surgery etc. I just need something little to keep me sane and let me know that we are not alone, and his life shouldn't suffer at all.....

Recently, me an my son went into a hearing test. We consulted the doctor what would be the best procedure for my son since he has congenital bilateral microtia. The hearing test result was severe hearing loss. That give me a bit heartache and make me worried for him. He is now 9 year old and compared with his hearing test when he is still 4 year old, his hearing test result came to worse. We are now preparing for his surgery, unfortunately his CT scan has to undergo further evaluation. The doctor advised me that my son might undergo either BAHA implant or middle ear implant. Its a bit scarry for me since there will be a risk of infection for those two procedure. I am researching now for possible ear tube implant if this would be possible and prosthesis ear for his outer ear. That quite difficult for me, emotionally and financially. As for your child you may try the new technology cochlear implant might help your child to hear. Better to consult the ENT then they will endorse you to another specialist. For all the trials we have to look at it in a possitive way. Researchers are continuouly innovating new technology for us.

What has your doctor said to you about the failed tests? Have they said he was deaf or are they still looking for reasons he might not be hearing well? I think you should take a deep breath and relax. Even if your son is deaf, he won't break. He is still a healthy boy. Our second daughter was born with her hip dislocated and had to wear several braces and even a body cast during her first year. Because of that we babied her and let her get away with more than her sister did at that age. Now she is 4 and rotten as can be. If your son is deaf, please try to treat him normal for your other child's sake as well as his. If he is deaf then your family will learn sign language and it will probably be challenging at first but you'll do just fine. There may be challenges, but with your support I'm sure he'll have a wonderful life.
