How do you feel about trading houses for travel?

I watched the movie the Holiday and in the movie these two women traded houses for the Holidays. It was like everything like they used each others cars and stuff like that. After watching this movie I was wondering if people really did this. So I looked it up online and saw that it really does happen. I think it would definately save you money like on hotels and rental cars but I would be rather skeptical about having someone stay in my home that I have never met while I am across the globe. How do you feel?

I think it's an interesting idea but where do you find a legitimate program that helps you to swap houses with someone? Orrr. Do you just trust someone at random on the other side of the world or anywhere really. It seems like a good idea but the trust issue is the biggest problem.

the online groups that you can join to do this check you out, and the home owners are told to check you out, and after you do this a few times you build a trust with the online service which they use to recommend you for the next house you want to swap with. problem is finding a match who wants to visit were you live, and do you want to visit were they live? i actually like the idea, i would be scared i would break something.

I would really like to see that movie. Yes, house swaps are popular and it can be arranged on the Internet. A person would have to join a respected house swapping club. Then he or she could swap their house in say England for another members house say in Canada. They would have to trust each other. I have also heard about Couch Surfing. A traveler can arrange to stay on someones couch for the night. Then he or she could do the same for travelers going to his or her home country. I prefer to stay in locally owned guest houses because I would be nervous of letting someone stay in my house. I might have a problem with what to do with my two dogs. They usually stay at home when I go off traveling and they get care from or mum or a dog sitter.

I think that this is an excellent idea! I have never done it myself but I would sure like to try this at some point in the future. I am a little anxious about it though! I think that you have to get to know someone extremely well before you decide to take action on this decision. Did you find a website that specialises in this? If so I sure would like to know the name of the website so that I can check it out for myself. Andrew

No way. No matter how much I trust someone, I won't go that far until trading what I own. I don't fancy the idea of someone as a stranger using my house and my stuff. I can't deal with that. Maybe some people do feel comfortable with that but not me. I would rather book a hotel room, rent a car and burn a hole in my wallet for all that than trading my house.

Lol, I saw that movei not too long ago. It was cute but I didn't check to see if people actually do it. I think the idea is kinda cool but as it was stated before, I'd be careful and paranoid I might break something.

It is done in my country. I live in the city, in the capital and have no beach nearby. So I could exchange a house near a beach for my house. It doesn´t have to have the same commodities. You can close one room and put away the things that are more intimate.
