Hi there Taz, I'm a girl and love a heated debate. Me and my husband are always at it. I was one of the best in college and University. Some people say that I should have been a lawyer...but I think that's an exaggeration....and I hate lawyers, so it's abit of an insult.LOL
But I can only debate with someone if they are making sense, being respectful and not talking out of their a***. I hate people being argumentative in a debate for the SAKE of just being contentious. You know, they'll argue with you about a point just because their bored or frustrated and just enjoy being difficult.....attitude problem.
A debate has to be mature, where people are actually sincere and have something profound and thoughtful to put forward, with the aim of improving life, by learning and being open.
A debate done with the right intention, with respect, with humility, with a genuine interest and willingness to learn is perhaps one of the best things human beings can do together, and should do.
It enables people to come together from all walks of life, and unite and share important things in life, the outcomes of debates can influence people to see holes in their logic and make life changing decisions, it can truely be a divine thing if done for the right reasons.
You know one thing I love is watching Tibetan monks debate. In their Monasteries they have a time alloted everyday for debating. Hundreds of them get together in a ground, split into groups of two or three and debate full whack.
It's amazing! They will be standing up, hands will be flying everywhere, voices will be raised due to the intensity of the passion, but there will never be any disrespect or abuse, there's a consistent undercurrent of humility and sincerity there.
They do this because it sharpens their wits and communication skills. The challenge also shows them where their weak points of logic and understanding are, it's one of the best learning experiences for them.
I often get pretty jealous when I watch them.
It seems debating is a difficult thing on mylot as even if your debate is good, it can fly past alot of peoples heads and you get rated negative for it unnecessarily.
Topics like Politics and religion are notorious, alot of people do not even bother to enter these interests anymore. So be careful.
I have put a few posts with the intention of having good sincere debate, but to no avail.
Perhaps you'll have better luck.
Angelie

Hello there,
I prefer to have a cool friendly discussion. I feel that if I have to come to mylot and have heated debates with someone it would take away from the whole experience of me wanting to be here. I signed up because I wanted to come here, chill out with the people and to make a little extra money on the side. I knew that I would never get rich at mylot so I don't really try to be too competitive here. I consider it my peaceful refuge. But there are some as you've already mentioned that have come here only to debate. If they want to debate I usually say whatever it is that I have to say then I just leave those kinds of people alone because I don't have any time for them.

I prefer a heated debate if everyone plays nice. Heated and calling each other stupid are two different subjects. It is frustrating to have a debate with someone who doesn't understand the formal rules of debating. Then the subject is simpler to walk away from.

Oh ya, I completely agrees to the point that a debate & an argument are completely different things. An argument can be irritation while a debate can be thrilling.
