I normally update my security softwares, like anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware often to be able to keep me safe. On the other hand I update the rest only when needed, I am free or when there is a problem with the program. It is also recommended to update other software to promote stability. However in some cases there may be buys with the newer software or it may use higher cpu resources or lose some features. But overall it is often recommended to update it.

If it is not necessary, I don't want to upgrade my softwares to the latest version. I think it just becomes bigger and bigger and adds more unnecessary features. It will slow down the computer. If my softwares work well, why I have to use the new version? For example, My Photoshop is still 4.0:)

if the software upgrade is free, why not?
also what i always consider before upgrading a software is will the serial work on the upgrade? i've downloaded some software update before and sometimes, the serial works and other times, it requires me to purchase a new serial.

it is a good habit to update your computer softwares. i update each and every software present in my pc. Every time an update is released there are a few bugs in the preveous version that are fixed in the update and some new features that are added for the users. So you should update your softwares regularly for smooth functioning of your pc.
