Permission for time off from work?

So now i have this dilemma. back in November 08 i made plans to return to Chicago and by the time i made it to Idaho they were in stone. Hotel reservation made and paid for in advance, people staying with me with nowhere else to go, and a plane ticket bought...basically well over a grand invested in this trip. Which is awesome...i make this trip every. One catch...all of this was planned BEFORE i started working for Walmart.
I just found out a few weeks ago that Walmart apparently blacks out requests from the beginning of November through the holiday season and i imagine for at least a couple of weeks there after to cover unthankful gift receiver return season. Now this trip is set in stone. But now I have to deal with this whole idea of letting the boss know hes going to have to approve it regardless of what "official policy" is.
Now i will tell you that my belief on this is way different then most. I believe that when i work I'm doing it to accomplish two things. One: to support myself to survive. 2: So i have the money to do the things i want to do. now all year i survive. And i plan all my trips a year in advance and generally have them about two thirds paid for by the time of the trip. My thought and belief is where I'm employed by a company...I'm not enslaved to it. I tell them what my availability is, not the other way around. And when i request time off, I'm not asking permission as a 5 year old would ask his parents if he can go to a sleep over...I'm telling them that I will not be in the area those dates so don't schedule me. Period.
Now a lot of agreement has come up between one of my friends about this. And he has the opposite view. So i thought id just throw it out there for conversation.

I can see where Wal-Mart has this kind of policy for their workers. I would suggest that you make an appointment within the human resources department and explain how this trip had been made in advance for over a year. If that doesn't work then make an appointment to meet with the store manager. I also suggest that you make up an agreement so that when it is approved or disapproved you will have proof. By doing this now is showing that you are letting them know way in advance and if they agree and something comes up you will have the proof that it was discussed at an earlier date. Good luck and let me know how it works out.
