My son is ten and up until a recent celebrity death had never heard of MJ. But it took over the Greek news and each day he would inform me of something new he'd just heard, he was murdered, he killed himself, he's still alive, they're fighting over the money. It still goes on and yesterday he announced he now has a video game out even though he is no more. So what has my delightful son gone and done?
Found MJ's videos on the internet and is now blasting them out to annoy me. I suppose I should blame myself for not censoring the news but I think the news is good for chldren. But obviously not when reported to excess. Your thoughts.

Hi dear!
It looks bizzare to me that how too much news or say over-dose of news about an ex-celebrity could affect a little child's mind. It is really bad and I also wish like you that news should be filtered and we should guide our kids what is good news and what is worthless/useless news.

Hi dear!
Sorry for misunderstanding the intended meaning in your post.
If you son starts believing that all news are not the correct one and may be exaggerated, he may start viewing the news from that angle.

Hi dpk, I believe you misunderstood me, I wasn't implying my sons mind had been affected or that he should only see filtered news, he did understand that the nonsense of the same news being on day after day detracted from the usual news he would see, and the constant coverage became a form of lunacy. What I would observe is that he is less likely now to believe in the accuracy of the news and new sensational stories about the same thing each day just lead to skepticism and amusement. But then again the earlier he becomes skeptical and questions more, the better.

Hello my friend
Well I was a fan of Michael Jackson not a huge fan but a fan none the less, my grandson became really into him 2 months before he passed everyday on youtube watching/learning his dance moves I must say he is really really good at it, when he sings songs like man in the mirror he ask me what does it mean, my baby is 6 well 7 now and I explain to him what the songs mean the he really gets into now that he understands, now that Michael is gone I encourage my grandson to watch/dance/sing to his music I like to listen to it as well, I figure this can't hurt him, he will actually learn somethings from this man.
I do know what you mean if you don't like the music it would be hard to tolerate, some of his lyrics are really deep and gives us food for thought there is never anything wrong with that right?

Hello my friend
Oh no sweety not at all , what I should have done was touch on the media aspects of the post myself, I kinda got caught up in the music and forgot my train of thought lol, although granted there was many other things going on in the world and they should have taken that into consideration I do feel he deserved all the coverage that was given to him, Michael has been around for a long time and he was huge in his own right, to just let the public know that he passed and talk here and there about his life to me would have been unfair to his memory,he deserved the coverage in my opinion after all they could not stop speaking about him when he was alive,so this is how I feel and in no way do I see you any different I still want to exchange thoughts with you as much as possible just keep in mind I wont always agree and hopefully I will express myself in a way as to not offend anyone.
A lot of people feel the way you feel so its really good, how boring will this world be if we all agreed on everything

Hello my friend
Thats makes a lot of sense having a specific channel so if you want to tune it you can, like I said I was a fan not a die hard fan like a lot of other people, I do feel he got his just and it only shows how important he was to a lot of people, not all but quite a bit, some people feel he didn't get enough coverage I don't know I Feel bad for the man either way I believe he was misunderstood in a lot of ways, virgos tend to be that way I feel no one gets me, no one understands me, being here at mylot helps me with that issue.
Never worry I don't think we will disagree much to be honest with, if I find that we seem to disagree more than agree I will not respond although a good debate never hurt anyone who wants to debate all the time, so we will be fine I like sharing thoughts with you my friend.

If they don't hear from the news, they hear it from other sources even at that age my friend, so even if you do censor the news etc, they will still find out, does he use the computer? He can pick up things from the internet obviously, with newsflashes that come on Yahoo for example, he can pick things up from school, from his peers even just by listening when he goes out, so you can't stop him hearing about it and sadly that's life, you want to protect your children from what's going on but the sad fact of life is that they have to know that the world is not a wonderful place and bad things do happen, it also I believe makes them tougher as well and probably smarter too, because he is learning, whether he is hearing bad news or not, he is still learning and probably he knows more about MJ than Wolfie, so that is something. We cannot shield children from everything sadly. Your son actually sounds quite intelligent and obviously older than his ten years which I think is admirable. But never blame yourself my friend. I am sure he would have heard about it regardless.

Hi Wolfie, now you've actually read me all wrong on this one my friend. Whilst of course I wish to protect my son physically I would never attempt to censor the news from him to protect him from things going on in the world, my objection here that he was constantly bombarded with the same piece of news with its many interpretations. Obviously I check what he is exposed to but he has only just started using the internet and he knows what he is allowed to use it for and not to wander into dodgy areas there.
But actual news, no matter how disturbing, is part of life. Take for an example the worst news which could have ever been broadcast, the discovery of the nazi concentration camps and what was happening there. It was also happening to children and if some of those children managed to survive what they had endured then surely another child should learn from that and not be protected from it, but obviously with a mature adult on hand to explain the circumstances in detail.
Thank you for the kind remarks about my son, his remarkable intelligence is recognised by all in our area and he is a much adored child.

Nothing at all to forgive my dear friend, your view was welcome and would probably be the one which would concern most parents, rather than my own interpretation. As I just commented to the first responder though I believe that there are far more worthy people whose deaths should be commented on much more and would benefit many with extensive coverage. Unfortunately these now pass as just a footnote in history.

Hey thea~ I really don't know what to say! I was a big MJ
fan myself and still blast the music too! I really loved him!
I grew up with his music! As for censoring your children,
I don't know? How long can you really do that if they are
on the Internet! How do you think MJ's children must feel
seeing all this terrible stuff about their own Father? I
don't really see the harm in your son playing his videos, but
you are his Mother so that would be up to you. But, censoring
is difficult these days as long as children have Internet
access it is going to be almost impossible! As soon as they
can read and use a computer and a mouse that's it!

Yes the news tends to blow some things way out of proportion, and i think that it is going to be a long time before we here the end of MJ. and i agree whit you that it is good to let kids watch the news that way they get a better proseptive on what the world is, and you can be their to answer any questions that they have. So they have a better understanding of what is happening.

Hi dlr, we are in agreement I see. Have you noticed as well that just being on here we pick up news from outside our own countries which would never make our news, for instance from India. Certainly children should watch the news and would be better served by not being bombarded with this celebrity culture which seems to be taking over.

There are many problems with the Media, however most of them stem from us, the viewers. News shows are just like any other TV show and need ratings, so they have reformatted their shows and what they air to get people to watch, and I guess it is working. Even though so many people say it that they are sick about hearing about MJ or the Obamams they still watch, which still drives up ratings, which tells the news people "they must like it, let's air some more."
I have some friends that are in visual media and they hate what it has become. Spoon (my best friend in the whole world.) is attempting to become a movie producer and even has a few scripts written, but main stream Hollywood won't even look at him, because his stuff doesn't fit into the new "Hollywood" look. I guess because his scripts aren't either all hippy lovey or over the top gruesome like SAW.
Great topic though. :D Happy Mylotting!

hi psycospaz, the point you make is something I really hadn't considered that much, that the news is now goverened by ratings so obviously then it dumbs down to mass market appeal. It has always been that way with newspapers but I always think of the news as more of a 'public service broadcast.' In the UK the BBC represented the government line so was always to be taken with a pinch of salt, but at least it funded other new options for the more serious minded, such as the excellent 'Newsnight'. Together with Channel 4 news we could appreciate investigative journalism rather than the headline facts with no depth. But as you are now depicting a ratings war over news coverage then without doubt the nonsense celebrity culture will come to dominate the news out of all proportion.

I really started noticing it when the morning shows changed their formats to more of a talk show, happy go lucky feel. And that is when I quit watching the news. Fox and ABC is the worse for those types, I think. But if that is what the masses want, that is what the masses get.

Hello, Thea. I expect your son is just going through a temporary kid's obssession on this, and by this time next week he'll have moved on to something else. Difficult as it may seem, you can hasten the moment by ignoring the MJ blasts if you can. The positive thing to take from this is that your son has at least exhibited an ability to absorb and process what he hears on the news.

Hello Sandra, I think my son was rather intrigued by the whole idea of something continuing on the news for so long and the latest craze of playing the music online is simply to annoy me. He already has a knack of absorbing the news perfectly and dragged out the map the other night to try and locate exactly where the recent fires were.
Hope the flu is getting better, at least when I see you online it reassures me

Dear Thea,
It is the same here in this part of the world.
My son heard of MJ but nothing much about him besides
the knowledge that he is a singer, which later get fairer
skin and had done plastic surgery. But since June 25th 2009,
everyday, everywhere - TV news, Yahoo News, blogs, e-mails,
radio all about MJ. Out of sudden he is busy searching about MJ
in the net, putting MJ videos on his blog, watching MJ concert
on Saturday night since the TV channel still dedicate MJ month
even now already in end of August! In the whole month of June &
July almost all the channels in the radio playing MJ songs everyday!
MJ 'moon walk', MJ songs titles...then he would say 'I never knew
this song is MJ song!, then he read newspaper recently on the report
of MJ overdose..so on and so forth!
You know my son like about theme park, now he is wondering how big is
MJ 'NeverLand' theme park...
All the best and take care!

Hi Iriene, your son seems to have got it bad, in my own sons case he just can't believe that this one event can drag on so endlessly and the video was only found to expressely annoy me, not because he wants to emulate him. But even in Malayasia now it has taken over the media, I would rather see a news report from Malaysia which of course will never happen unless you were to suffer a large national disaster. Such nonsense coverage and obsession leads to less real news being reported. Please explain to your son the wastage of money over this neverland theme park and how bad budgetary practices would surely have lead to its forced selling to cover the debts. Thea

Sometimes am not even sure if the media is aware that their news is affecting the child. I am sorry if the news of Michael JAckson has somewhat affected your child..maybe it's best if you can divert him some other games or toys rather than that MJ stuff, how ever it's also true that there was a Michael Jackson video game in Sega..
