how to optimize my web site?

i built my website 4 days ago, i wondered to get as many as visitors and build high traffic and rank, i've submitted my web to many search engines, and checked it through SEO test on metamend.com. it said that my web is not fully optimized. so, what makes different between search engine and SEO? some one told me that my web need SEO and back links. can you guys help me how to use them and make my web full of traffic and get high rank, considered that I'm a dummy. please help me...
