Future of islamist terrorism

Which way will islamist terrorist groups go:
1) They disappear because of unimportance (like the leftwinged red army faction in the 70ies in Germany did).
2) They give up violence and make their work in institutional ways (like the ira in ireland).
3) They dont give up and fight for decades or even centuries.

I think it really depends on how the rest of the world reacts to them.
If we give into their demands or make policy changes out of fear, they are going to only get stronger.
If we pursue them and prosecute them as criminals, I think they will lose support and eventually die out.
