Hateful groups are posting urgent notices everywhere and are hosting a telephone attack on the governor asking him to overrule Harvey Milk Day.
We need everyone's support! We need to show Governor Schwarzenegger that we are a country that celebrates diversity and equality. Everyone, even if you don't reside in California, please call the governor and urge him to uphold Harvey Milk Day.

I don't have a problem with a Harvey Milk day, but besides being gay and murdered what makes anything he did significant enough to have a day for him. Just asking.

He paved the way for the gay community; he made it so they didn't have to wear whistles on their own streets, he made it so the police would quit randomly beat people up, he made it so people could be proud of who they are, and of their family. He helped spread equality, worldwide.

No, sorry. That's like my insisting they name a day for my adoptive mother who adopted children as a single woman, during a time that was unheard of, and paved the way for other single parents to adopt. It only means something to a few and not to the whole.

You obviously didn't read the link I sent you. You don't like to celebrate heroic equal rights activists? People who helped spread equality?
Maybe you would prefer a documentary?

I think you need to look at this from the governor's perspective. All these holidays cost money. California is BANKRUPT. They are going to release convicted criminals from prison just to save money and you want that money spent on a holiday? Think about that for a second. What is more important, keeping people safe, funding hospitals, or funding a holiday for a deceased gay politician? Too many people fail to recognize the monetary issue with these holidays. We need to take care of the living first.

It wouldn't be a paid state holiday. It doesn't even require schools to provide education about his life(although it does encourage it.) How would this cost the state money? I really don't know what provisions of the bill would be a cost to the state government if they are just recognizing it as a significant historical day.

I'm all for gay rights and even support them getting married but I just have to say a big NO to this

A big no to celebrating an equal rights activist? Why on earth?

That is reassuring to hear, and has tears rolling down my cheeks.
:-)
I hope you are right. It will be such a victory for California, and the country, and equality.
