If you could be paid to do a study on anything, what would you choose?

Dissertation Example - This a very thin looking version of what your study could look like when published, only imagine it much thicker, depending on what you chose. Mine real life dissertation was thicker than this, but only because of the appendices lol! The study mentioned in this would be massive!

I think it works the same whenever you are, but in the UK in university the final year involves doing a dissertation, which is a big 10,000 word study into a topic of your choice, or rather one that fits into the course and on which someone can tutor you. Well for this question I am thinking along those guidelines, but bigger. So in the sense that if you have ever wondered about anything, that is what you would be commissioned to study, and so it would be your answer here. For myself I have always wanted to study something to do with psychology, and most recently about attitudes to death and the meaning of life (though not in a religious sense, just in a psychological 'why do people chose to live' sense). So that would be what I would pick and I would be glad of it too since I don't imagine that anyone would answer those sorts of questions unless I Came at them with the backing of a credible educational facility lol. In the past I wanted to do a study that related to the use of the Internet and I think the prevalence of certain personality types, but I was younger than and realise it probably wouldn't be relevant as I first thought. Still if I had the time I would have that as a side project lol But yea enough about me, if you were commissioned to do a study on anything, anything in the world where money and time were no objects, what would you choose and why? Happy mylotting and many thanks for the responses, Dranz

Hi DCLeshnsherr, first of all can I call you DC, that's all a bit of a mouthful? Well in my university days my dissertation was on Jacobean Horror Tragedies, a study of evil souls encapsulated in some wonderful characters who loved to take revenge. These days though if I would study anything knew I would have said the Holocaust but have probably already done so rather completely without the need to complete a dissertation on it, so I would go with the psychological aspect of a serial killers egotism.

Hi thea, If you wanted a shorter name to use then feel free to go with Dranz, that's my nickname, DCLehnsherr would be my whole name if I expanded the initials Wow, I am fascinated by your choice of topic, it really sounds like it would be an amazingly thought provoking read, especially since I have an interest in both psychology and the Holocaust. Who would you be looking at when you did this? The egotism makes me think you would be looking at the main people like Hitler and is it Himmler? (I need to dig out a book sometime to find that name!) Do you have any idea what your conclusions would be? Regardless, many thanks for the response, I have a terrible feeling I could quiz you on this for hours now!! Dranz

Hi thea, I never noticed this before I do wish there was a notice that got sent when someone replied to a comment in your discussions . Apologies for not reading what you said so well the first time. I tend to read things and the reply from memory, but since my memory and concentration aren't the best I remember abstract parts so often get the wrong end of the stick. I am working on it through The egotism thing definitely makes more sense when applied to the serial killers I will admit. I think it is my mum that wants to find out about them, or hunt them down in the FBI or something. I am interested in the psychology that brings them to where they are, though egotism sounds fascinating as well. I have always been interested in how they can make themselves so normal when they have that urge inside them, I would be driven insane by it, though sometimes that is what gives them away isn't it, the egotism? So would you focus a little on the ones who contact the media as well? I am definitely reading this paper if you ever publish it though. Have you done any work on it yet, like research online, or is it more an idea for the future? If you have worked on it I definitely want to hear what you found out (I won't publish it I promise lol) All the best, Dranz

Hi DCLehnsherr, I have desired to study so many that I have lost count :( Thanks for letting me get this out in open - even if it would be termed madness. Well, from social angle, I'd say I'd want to identify if we can all have vegetable gardens, and a badminton court/ a table tennis room / gymnasium doubling as community room, on the rooftop of most of the buildings in our country. India is one of those countries that is bursting at seams with population. It is difficult to provide healthy food to everybody as cost of food is mounting because the land that was formerly used to grow food is now being used to build homes for people. Such being the requirement, we do have rooftops which we dont really use optimally. In our own apartment complex we have about 6000 sq.ft. roof space! Not being used even to take a walk! I think it is a shame that we dont at least try to use this, and let the lands that are used to grow vegetables be free for growing grains. And the funny thing is many of the vegetables are such that if we grow them properly - we could get adquate harvest for all the apartment owners in the complex, and it would also provide employment for some green thumbs. And may be there could be a way we could collect the kitchen water (I've seen my friends water their plants with water that was used to wash rice, fruits, and vegetables. Most of these are daily routine. We just have to ensure that it reaches the roof everyday and is recycled into these plants instead of getting mixed in the non usable water. Of course, it does seem far fetched doesnt it?

Hi DCLehnsherr, thanks a lot. :-) If I'd uttered it amongst my friends they would've looked at me as somebody who is crazy - but u gave me an opportunity to let it out of my head - and not feel embarassed about thinking out of box! Thanks for giving me that confidence. :-) Have a nice day. :-)

Hey Vandana, Wow that is an amazing answer. You are truly a visionary and this, if it worked, would be something that could completely revolutionise food production. I am definitely impressed. It seems like something that would be so obvious to people, but I don't think I have heard it before now. I know that some people here have strange grass on rooftops for heating or something (I am not entirely sure what the grass is for!) but I haven't come across food production on rooftops before. All I can say is that I hope you can get this idea listened to sometime, and maybe the study commissioned because I think this would definitely be very worth while. Many many thanks for sharing :) Dranz

Hi Vandana, Because your idea sticks in my mind even now I have awarded you the BR. I really do think it is amazing what you came up with, and it would be amazing to see this take off in the future. Good luck and all the best, Dranz :)

would love to have my master's degree and doctorate in Psychology. I already finished my undergrad course in Psychology and i wanted to go further. I do find psychology is much interesting and i enjoy studying with it.

Hey Rainmark, Is there a particular aspect of psychology that interests you the most, and which you would want to study in more detail? I think I would have liked psychology at university as well but I had been set on archaeology so ended up there instead :( Congrats on graduating from the course though and thanks for the response :) Dranz

Hello, what an interesting topic. i have done 2 dissertations, for my BA and MA. Both were on Shakespeare, but one was on the History Plays and the other was on English and American films of Shakespeare plays and the cultural differences and contemporary influences evident in the films. In the second dissertation, Kenneth Branagh's work played a big part. If I could do another dissertation, given the parameters you set out, it would be about Kenneth Branagh and Laurence Olivier. Branagh was described as 'The New Olivier' when he produced and acted in 'Henry V,' and I'd like to test the hypothesis that he was indeed a new Olivier by conducting a detailed analysis of both men's work and their creative influences. This would involve interviews with colleagues of all descriptions and family members, so it would be a very expensive undertaking. It would also involve detailed study of Shakespeare's plays, paricularly where the careers of Branagh and Olivier overlapped. The chapter in my dissertation concerning the two, and more specifically the mountain of material that had to be left out of the final work, convinces me that this project would prove both interesting and academically challenging.

Wow you must have done fantastically well at university, just reading this makes me think that you are super intelligent. I am most definitely impressed (especially since I never really connected with Shakespeare, though I did like the Baz Luhrman Romeo + Juliet movie!) Amazing response though, utterly amazing. Dranz
