I read about making your own cotton vegetable bags in place of those expensive "green bags". Sounded good to me so I tried it out by putting my bell peppers in a clean dish towel instead of the bag they came in. It's been a week and those cut-up peppers are still crisp and fresh, no signs of going bad!
You can use unbleached muslin or some non-dyed cotton and make your bags about the size of a piece of typing paper. If you want to get fancy you can make a drawstring but velcro works well and so does a decorative clothespin!
I'm going to make me a few now that the towel did such a good job. I'll be making them for friends and relatives, too!

hey, this is something I had never heard of before. I'll have to try it - I have a fridge full of vegetables right now and making them last longer would be great.

It really does work! Look around your house for some old towels or something and it will be free!

You're welcome! There's also the memory box, where you buy a cheap tin at a thrift store and fill it with folded papers, each containing a memory that you treasure concerning that person. My dad said it was the best gift he'd ever received.

I never could pick a good pear either till I began going by their scent. A ripe one smells like nothing else!

I will have to give that a try. I like thos Debbie Meyer's Green Bags. They actually work really well, and keep everything fresh a lot longer especially Bananas, and lettuce. Of course they cost money to buy them, but they are reusable, but not more than once or twice you bad idea would be great as you can just wash the bags after using them and reuse them forever. That is also a very nice gift idea.

I'm always looking for good gift ideas that don't cost a lot of money but show how much you love someone. This one is good for a lot of my family and friends.
