wi-fi is a connection without wires so wireless!!If your computer, desktop or laptop, have a micro card for wi-fi you can connect your device when you are close to an hotspot or if you have a wi-fi router at home you can connect to the ent without wires and so the normal hardware to do that...
so it is normal that if a laptop have a wi-fi enabled connection you can have a mobile connection without a data plan and so on...surely it works only when it is possible to capture the waves generated from an hotspot or wireless router..

Wi fi is nothing but wireless. It is not for laptops alone. You can even have a wi fi connection in your house. If you have a desk top computer and a lap top, and if you internet is connected to the desk top, you can also browse the internet in the lap top via wifi. For this you need a external wifi router, which your internet provider will be able to provide you, either free or with a little cost.

WiFi is for unwired connections. It uses radio communication so I think communication using optical means like infra-red in remote is a different thing. All computer peripheral now attached by wire before has wifi alternatives - keyboard, mouse, printers, scanners and even monitors.

Wi-Fi is like portable "online." It's a way for people to not have internet on there laptops or moble devices while roaming the earth. For example, most McDonald's fast food restaurants have wi-fi now.

I think all the other users expalined it so well, I don't have much to add to what they have told you. I agree with them, as I have a desktop, and a laptop. I have the router connected to my desktop which is wired, as I don't have a wireless adapter for that. I do use my laptop more than my desktop as I can move it form room to room if I want to. If I didn't have the router, I wouldn't be able to use the laptop as I do have a router which runs both computer which makes it a network. I have notied too, that the router will make my computer run faster, and that is a very good thing as I do get impatient waiting for pages to load. I hope that everything that has been mentiond help you tounderstand about wifi. Have a great day, and happy mylotting.
