Has Anyone Used a Social Networking Site for a Good Cause?

I have been thinking recently, I run a fanpage on Facebook for a particular actor, and we have 4660 plus members. Some of us have got to know each other quite well, in fact one member went abroad to meet up with some of the others and had a great time!
We will often post up news and discuss events for charities which our favoured actor supports or promotes, and it has got me to thinking, we are such a big group of people with a common interest, could we not do something useful with this?
Does anyone else have experience with using a Facebook group of friends to coordinate some sort of effort for charity?
Please share your thoughts!

Yes, I have used facebook for a good cause. On my birthday, instead of asking for presents, I set up a cause on facebook and told people to donate to it. My cause was the Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition. They work to get people working together across diagnosis lines. I raised $580.00.

Facebook has "Causes". I'm not sure if it's an app or what, but there's tons of causes/charities that you can join or donate to and I believe you can also start one, but I'm not sure how it's done. You can either spread the word on your cause or donate money. I'm with several causes there myself.

Thanks for your comments, yes I believe you can set up a cause page, or join one. Maybe I could set up a separate page for whatever we choose to do and link it to our original group. You have both given me food for thought anyway, thanks!

That's awesome that you use Social Networking sites for a good cause. Care to share the link to your facebook page? I might be interested in becoming a fan or joining your group. .
The only site I've used for a good cause has been Care2, although I have to admit I haven't been on it much in the past 5 months or so.. Care2 I believe is a type of social networking site where you actually meet people you share.. "causes" with and hook up to do things like demonstrations with and whatnot. I've also joined a VegSpace site (it's supposedly like the MySpace for vegetarians, vegans, and people wanting to promote animal rights..), if those count. You should check them out if interested!

Thanks for your response! Thats interesting about Vegspace, I didn't know that existed. The actor our fanpage is for is Christopher Eccleston, and there are a few charities he supports which we have posted up there, for example he is an ambassador for Mencap - I think that would be a good place to start as I can motivate my fellow fans to support something related to our page.
I just felt there was a huge group of us who were always saying, part of why we are fans is the charity stuff, so I started thinking, this many people in one place, surely we can do something USEFUL with it?!

I don't know, i do have a face book and but i don't use it often since friendster was better for even if the site no longer friendly. even in friendster there are those celebrities that has so many friends and so-called people that they consider as fans.........
