Hello JamesKYTan, I learn to drive with a manual car. After I get my driving license, I bought a manual car as my family all are driving a manual car. I drive manual car for more than 6 years already. My first time driving on an auto car was happen early of this year. I borrow my sister's car which is a auto car. My sister teach me how to drive her car verbally, she said if I know how to drive manual car, then it shouldn't be a problem for me to drive auto car. She taught me the function of D for driving, P for parking and R for reverse and N for neutral. It was not a good try for me. I drove the car carefully and SLOWLY! I found that it was so tough to drive a auto car . I returned the car to my sister after I went to the post office nearby. I told her I never want to drive a auto car again, it was so hard for me. My sister was like so shock to hear what I say and she keep asking me what was the problem. I then told her I could not control well on both my legs as my left leg is placed on the break pedal and my right leg is on the drive pedal. My sister laugh out loud and told me auto car need only 1 leg to drive! Oh my! She never tell me this when she borrow the car for me . I was so blur about that, but I felt lucky I able to drive an auto car with both legs and I could able to reach home safely.

Hi James, Yeah, the holiday season is ON now. May friends have drive back to their home town. I bet the traffic is getting bad and the auto car is just nice and come in handy. For those who are driving with manual cars, they sure got the hard time to switch around the gear. Auto car is good if we drive to up the highland or high hills.

Dear vingyan, last week there was a flash flood during heavy pour. My sister-in-law who worked in Putra Jaya takes 3 hours to reach home. The normal time needed was only 45 minutes. Thank God she just change from manual car to automatic car just 2 weeks ago. She got an Elite Viva for herself. Even on auto, she said it is really tiring..imagine if she is still using her old manual car!

vingyan, You sister is right, you need to use your right foot only if it is right-hand drive. You can rest your left foot.My sister in-law just bought an automatic car 3 weeks ago. At first she was apprehensive about driving an auto car.But just a couple of days ago,she was caught in a traffic jam during the Raya Hari holidays balik kampong exodus. The automatic gears do come in handy- no switching of gears. Wishing you happy driving auto car.

Hi there James, First of all, let me tell you a little about myself. I have a driving license for more than a decade now. But I dont drive! It is just too stressful for me. The most I've done is drove down to the nearest grocery shop as I was really needing something urgent then. I have 3 cars at home, one auto, two manuals. All driven only by my husband. So you can imagine, at any one time, there will always be 2 cars left idle there. Still, I dont drive. I am just not born to drive!

i learned driving with a manual car, nd i guess that helps a lot for my knowledge. now i can drive any manual or auto car. i guess it is more important that we learn how to drive a manual car first. now i have a owner type vehicle and it is manual driving. i will teach my nephew too on manual driving. like you said you can drive a manual and an auto car but not all that can drive an auto car can drive a manual one.

TRUE that driving test is conducted on manual cars, but in the Philippines you can get a license even without getting the test. i am not proud of it but that is the truth. a lot of people get their license even without any knowledge in driving. scary but true.

If you can drive a manual car, you can drive an auto. But the converse is not always true. This means we have to learn to drive using a manual car first. Anyway, driving test is conducted in manual car.

se7enthbird,Wow, without sitting for test can still get a driving test. What is the meaning of this? Corruption? I think not only Philippines, Most South-East Asian countries. The power of money can do wonders.

I am still taking car lessons and I use a manual car. I think manual cars are better since if you drive a manual you can also drive an auto but if vice versa, it would be difficult to drive a manual car. Apart from that i think that auto waste a lot of fuel so in regards also to expenses, manual are better.

Yes I am still taking car lesson and cannot wait to do the test! I need a car immediately but obviously I want to be prepared before I get one! Driving is a serious responsabilty for yourself and for others.

omiami,Yes, as drivers we have to be responsible for our driving actions. If you drive, don't drink. If you drink, don't drive.

Oh, omoami, you are still taking car lessons? Do you mean you will be taking driving test? All the best to you. Here in Malaysia, one has to take driving test in manual car, and one once pass, then one can opt to drive auto. In fact on long distance driving, I find that it save on fuel on my automatic car. Thanks for your view.

I drive a manual car, here in the UK 90% of people start off driving in a manual car because if you take your test in an automatic then you can only drie an automatic but if you take it in a manual then you can drive both. I dont really like automatic cars i find them lazy, driving a car should be just that, driving. With automatics i dont really feel like you are driving the car and you dont have a smuch control over the engine as opposed to a manual car.

I agree with you. Driving an automatic car, you cannot control the gear system effectively. However, driving a manual car you can switch to a lower to pick-up or to overtake safely and quickly. I drive an auto as well as a manual and I find that to pick-up or overtake, the response is faster for manual than auto.Or maybe my automatic car is locally made whereas my manual car is Japanese made that accounts for the difference in power. One thing for sure is automatics comes in useful when in traffic jam you do not have to switch the gear, just drive. Thanks for your view.

For smooth cruising, it is good to have auto-car. Especially when caught in a traffic jam, no manipulating of gears with automatic car. Some auto models, like what I possess comes with auto-cruise and in highways it is very useful. You can even rest you feet by engaging the auto-cruise and the car just sails along at the prescribed speed. Thanks for your contribution.

You mean you learn to drive using an automatic? In Malaysia we learn how to drive by using a manual car. In a driving test it is compulsory to use a manual car. In future it may change to auto. I don't know when.

I drive a manual because thats what I'm used to. There are probably more manual that auto here in the UK. If you take your driving test in an auto, you can only drive autos but, if you take it in a manual, you can drive either. I've only ever driven an auto once... when the driver broke his ankle and we had to get his car home. I was the 2nd named driver on his insurance.

In Malaysia there are market for manual as well as auto. But automatic car is getting popular. In regard to driving test, there is only one test that is manual car test. Registry and Inspection of Motor Vehicles is planning to use auto car in the driving test.I don't when it will be implemented? 5 years or 10 years down the road? OR may be more. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.

Dear James, I am still driving my first and only car till to date! It is a manual car. I love it very much. However, I do drive a couple of times an auto car..it is not mine! I think auto car is great when driving long distance and also during heavy traffic congestion A bit slow in 'pick up'...perhaps I am abit bias..LOL since I do not have one! I remembered once when I drove my manual car to fetch my son and also when on the way back. It was a heavy 'standstill' jam plus bumper to bumper jam. My feet and my left arm is so tired and painful....I was thinking just pulled my handbrake and do not be bothered and rest awhile. That's the time when my mind criticised my 'not thoughtful' husband....for not thinking and buying an auto car for me. You know what? I am still driving my old faithful 17 years old car! Hmmmm, my advise will be " Marry a rich loving hubby who can afford to buy a new car every 2-5 years"..

Hello JamesKYTan, I drive a manual car. But I made a device which could switch from one gearbox to another. In case I had to drive it in automatic like when I am on the highway. Cheers! Thok

Hello Thok, You mean you install a device that enable you switch from manual to automatic? You made that device or in other words invented it? Wow, how clever of you! Get it patented, you could make at lot of money,Thok. For those drivers using manual, it will be very useful. They will be your buyers. Can you please elaborate?

Yes. Afcourse. I basically put two seperate gearboxes into my car. The crankshaft itself is seperated into three different parts. The middle part is attached to a control handle within the cockpit. I move the handle and it moves the middle section of the crankshaft between the two gearboxes. It's a very simple design but it works like a charm and it can be easily replaced. I haven't thought of selling it or giving the design to a car manufacture. Cheers! Thok
