how important are the engagement rings???

just want to know especially for the couples here... is engagement ring really important before you start the whole process of marriage preparations?? just a bit curious though since my bf and i have talked about settling down but there is no formal to anything yet because technically we are not engaged yet??? or, are we engaged? haha not so sure though if i dont have the ring... i mean... how important is it to have an engagement ring for those who are getting married?
to those who are married, getting married and have concrete plans already.. how did your preparations start?

Hi chiyosan, I am one year and four months married. And yes, we had an engagement ring before we start our wedding preparation. For me, it is important to have an engagement ring because it signifies that a serious commitment is expected for the couple. It also symbolizes that the couple is obliged to make all the preparation into a reality. For a girl to wear a engagement ring, simply reminds her everyday until the wedding that a big day is expected to come and at the same time, it gives her the excitement and motivation to give her best on her big day. Well i have not married yet, but my ex gf is a wedding consultant and you know what she spend 50% of her work on helping her client finding a ring?! I, myself didn't really understand how important the engagement ring is, but everytime i see the couple's face each time they found a proper ring engagement i believe that it is very very important:)

I don't think it is necessary to wear an engagement ring. More important is the mutual love, affection and the commitment . The engagement ring , wedding rings, dog dollars are the symbol of engagement or wedding. In some countries it is compulsory to wear one. In some places it is not necessary.In some coutries they will keep a tattoo on their body. As far as I concerned mutual understanding and love is greater than any symbols .

I think its down to each couple about what is important for them, some people arent so bothered about that kind of thing, they know they love eachother and want to marry, whereas others must have it before they get married.
I have one, i wanted one but i didnt want anything too expensive as i didny see the point, i wanted one as a gesture of love from my partner and he jsut brought me one that wasnt very expensive but it meant a lot too me.
