I've been a long time fan of hip hop but I don't like the stuff that is being played on the radio today or what I see on TV. I'm looking for some more artists to check out and am hoping someone here can turn me on to some new sounds.
What I like and listen to now: Most old school essentials, music that uses language in new ways or has story to tell or a message preferably positive or political, Mr. Lif, Brother Ali, Immortal Technique, Qwell, Typical Cats, Edan, Braille, and others.
What I probably would not like: over paid mainstream, gun clapping, grill wearing, rim spinning, 'yah boi'ing puppets in it for the money.
What underground / non-mainstream hip hop artist do you suggest I listen to?

You know what.. go to youtube, and search that. and then sort by most popular, and you can even add your city or state, and you may even find something local. I have found a few artists in my area that are pretty good.. almost anyone who is trying to be up and coming or wants to get their name out there is using youtube now a day. Sorry if that doesn't help you in the least, but at least its somewhere to start.
