Sherlock Holmes was actually based on a real person. Sherlock Holmes himself didn't exist, but was based on a real person, as far as I'm concerned. This is what I've read about the character.

Sherlock Holmes himself didn't exist. He was fictional. But, he was based on a real person. A doctor, named Joseph Bell. There is a Baker St, where Sherlock Holmes lived, but when the stories were written the actual address, 221B, wasn't a real one. It exists now and it's where the Sherlock Holmes museum is.
