Do you think that the economy is really better?

I keep getting mailings from my Congressman and reading reports in the news telling me how good the economy is but, if you take a drive in a technolgy area in Slicon Valley, it's like a ghost town. You see building after building and their parking lots empty.

I do not see how the economy is getting better either to be honest. It appears to be getting worse and worse to me...

I cannot comment on the state of the economy of the US because I live in Portugal now. However, I think the economy is the same in just about all countries. The one thing that effects me is the €/$ exchange rate. It worsened during the Clinton administration and the dollar devalued 2 cents the day after the Democrats gained control of Congress. The US economy is also gauged on world economy. Let's hope that the new congress will come up with some ideas (old or new) to get the economy back on track.

I found this thread very interesting. All the statistics show the US economy is slowing down in response to the interest rate hikes of last year (which take time to feed through). But the markets and the financial pages keep saying everything is OK.
This is of huge interest to the rest of the world - from the 1920's onwards, whenever America has slowed, the world economy has slowed too. The pundits keep saying that the world economy will decouple from the American one - but we don't know when that will happen, probably not for another decade.
What other signs have you noticed of a slowdown? How is property doing in your area?
