Hello Mylotters,
What could have been the reason that must have caused damage more than natural calamities and wars throughout our civilisation and to we mankind as well? Yes, This is what we call “SENTIMENT”. However, I am not here to talk about the big deal of ‘sentiment’ like the ones that unite the entire countrymen to fight against something that is against the common interest of a particular region. There is logic and is legit too.
But how about our petty sentiments on being American, English, Indian, French, black and white people in South Africa and still going a step further; Asian, European or the East and West sentiment? So easily this flicker a negative emotion in us and we do a lots of damage to our own being. We have seen blood shed over such ‘negative sentiment and people have been dying just like anything.
Still there is a great and the worst sentiment and that is the religious one. Look how long has been the enmity between the Christian and the Jews and the Hindus and the Muslims? What good have we achieved out of being outrageous if feel this is a slur upon our religion or our country or community?
Are not we educated enough to be able to form out our own reasoning and logic as to what to let in and what out?
Let us ponder over this and see the use and abuse of being sentimental.

It sounds as if you're describing prejudice instead of sentiment. It's the scourge of the human race, based on ego--we all must think we or our group is better than anyone different from us. It's folly of the worst sort and incredibly destructive. And it's unreasonable, ridiculous and unfair.
I think we grow out of it, if we're lucky, as we grow older and experience more of life and broaden our horizons. Too many people don't, though, and so it continues.

Hi there,
I understand the difference between the two but at one point they merge together when the semantic level undergoes a change. Prejudiced they are , sentimental they are. That you have an American sentiment as I have Indian. This difference that we belong to different regions mould our mental set up and our emotional level also tends to differ. There we become sentimental.
Whatsoever it is sentiment in any form has done great harm to mankind.

I will not see sentiment as all the bad things associated with life. I believe at times, in life, for few things our mind do not know how to react. in this case, it is sentiment. We like to scream or shed tears silently. But also it is used in bad ways.

Hi subha,
I know the proper word here should have been prejudiced. Even when we take sentiment in a narrow sense all these bad happening around us is the reflect of this. We fail in a way to respond where to and how to and clashes start popping out.

Yes, I must admit that I am too sentimental. When I was a little younger, I easily made decisions because I was too "drawn" with my beliefs and principles and because it is a great deal when it comes to my sentiments.
But now that I reached my maturity level, though I am still very emotional and sentimental, I know already how to handle tensions and emotions and judged everything in my environment with utmost care. I am now also very sensitive when it comes to other people's feelings. I always look on things logically and never judgmental anymore.
When it comes to religion as you mentioned, I am a devoted Catholic but never judged other religion, in fact I respected them and admired their beliefs, customs and traditions. I learned so many things from the great Pope, John Paul II, whom I admired so much. He was my role model of humility, fairness, justice and equality. I admire the way he treated all human beings. He made effort to bridge the gap between Jews, Catholics, Muslims and other religions when he was still alive, that's why I really respected other religions and sector, because they too are human beings that deserve respects and compassion.
I do have my own principles and sentiments towards governance and other concerns, but I never blame other people just because they take different route of principles, everybody has his own right to voice out opinions.
But in general I am very sentimental, talking heart to heart to the people I loved, sad movies and touching stories I read and watched on newspapers and television really reduced me to tears. I easily cry, I have a very shallow tears.

Hi Jlamela,
I can well understand your sentiment and feelings. Yes this is true that one gets drowned in one particular belief and sort of become blind. But you are reasonable and know that all religions have their own set of beliefs and creeds and they be allowed to practice their belief and value.
Unless we become tolerant to each other this Earth would become soon a hell.

The situation of showing your sentiments comes when you do feel its not going too well, the emotional part for me is like this.i usually make myself up if i go through stress and get annoyed on any issue or with people for silly matters.
why can't all people rely on the fact that the sentiments runs wide through all deprive of all the classifications. The negativeness is everywhere ,who created it ,yes,we humans for what, well to show their rage over happenings and this all ended up in nothing but brutality to man kind.People do not understand the need for peace when anger cross upon them.

Hi tintukm,
Your deliberation has a point. why all people do not come to one point of agreement and let peace prevail? No they would not for letting you the freedom you will ruin us. All nonsense and things would remain the same.

People have to think right and not go for other people's opinions without considering their own point of view.

I personally enjoy learning about the culture of my ancestors, who were German, Cherokee, Irish and English. But the problem would come from thinking that one of these is "better" or above the other. Which is what often happens if one is of one heritage and not mixed like so many Americans.
This is more of a problem with religions of the world.
No, I don't think that the majority of people in the world are educated enough to form thier own reasoning. Even here in the Bible Belt of the U.S. people are living sheltered lives. They may be educated from a viewpoint of "book smarts",especially if they have chosen to major in a specific subject, but they are not knowledgable about the variety of ideas and beliefs around them. Most christians do not venture too far from their safety zones and are told by thier preachers and ministers to avoid reading, hearing and seeing information about many subjects lest the devil find a weak spot to creep into their hearts.
Even libraries in small rural towns tend to be limited in books on various subject matter. I once purchased a book from a local library for 50 cents. It was brand new and was written by the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre. I have also found many books offering various viewpoints, ideals, philosophies, experiences etc in small town libraries on the for sale racks. I even know of a coservative christian mother who would not let her son watch the DVD "Ice Age"..l. because of what.. evolution? Geez.. we are not so far from the Dark Ages after all.

OMG, I just can not believe that your educated people are so illiterate and let themselves dominated by dogmas and not reasons. In comparison India is too liberal. Have you ever realized why this takes place or happens? It is the indulgence that we give to them.
We do not build sentiment but they do and impose on us. and you are forced to follow. how ridiculous is this. Now I realize that sentiment works and works mostly for the worse.
