Hi mylotters,Onam is celebrating this year from 1st September – 4th September this year. Here I would like to extend my Onam wishes to all members in mylot, especially those who are celebrating Onam festival. I think in mylot many are aware about Onam festival which is celebrated in Kerala state (South India) so I am not explaining about the same. The festival is the biggest festival of the state. The festival is celebrating by all people and there is no caste, religion difference for celebrating this and that is the specialty too. This festival shows the brotherhood, religious tolerance, etc. If anybody has any doubts about this festival I will reply to them individually. HAPPY ONAM TO ALL

Hi deepak, Made different types of dishes (including sweet dishes) and had lunch together in banana leaf. Made calls to both homes and also talked to close relatives, friends etc. Due to rain there was no outing but there was interesting progamms in TV. This is the brief explanation for your question.

You are right onam portends the months of joy and prosperity. But it is sad to know that gone are those days when kids gathered to collect flowers for the floral carpet or for the traditional onam games. Now everything has become mechanical, the joy of togetherness is lacking now.No one has time to celebrate onam in its letter and spirit in this fast world. We can buy everything from market readymade.Even we too had a fast and readymade onam feast this time.By the way how was your onam,it seems that you did enjoy and had a lot of celebration

Hi Cosmo, It seems the people from Kerala who reside out of the state are always trying their best to celebrate the Onam festival. In fact the celebrations are yet to over. We invited for the Onam feast on next Sunday by some organization. We celebrated Thiruvonam and made the dishes including ada pradhaman (a sweet dish). In my hubby’s home they are still making the flower motifs and following all the customs. Thanks for joining. Have a wonderful day.

Hi Suzzy, Thank you very much for your wishes. Today is the end of the celebrations and we celebrated it on September 2, which was the important day by taking one day leave (we are away from native) and prepared different dishes. Religious tolerance is the main attraction of Onam. Everybody celebrating the festival equally, making flower motifs in the yard, wearing new cloths, preparing variety of dishes and eating together, etc. Have a nice day dear.

I am very sad that I couldn't get leave to go home to celebrate Onam. I sent wishes to all my friends this morning and came to office. I don't feel like working. I am plannign to take off of work and go to hostel.

Hi daliaj, I am sorry to know that you didn't get leave so could not join with your family on the occasion of Onam. I can understand the disappointments. For us it is not possible to visit Kerala at the time Onam because our elder son won't get holidays on that time so we celebrating here Thiruvonam only. Thank you very much for your wishes. Hope you can celebrate the next Onam with your dear ones.

HEY Shree! A very happy Onam to you and your family.I do not celebrate Onam but I would love to hear from you how you celebrate this.Is this the festival related to Mahabali and Vamana Avataar?I have also heard of the Rangolis and the kadalai kozhambu and puttu[or is it jsut a Kerala dish? and not anything to do with Onam?].what are the special sweet dishes you are going to prepare? Are you talking a holiday or is it a declared one?[I forget]

Hi dear, First of all many thanks for your nice wishes. Yes, you are right, the festival is related to Mahabali (the King who ruled earlier) and Vamana (incarnation of Lord Vishnu). Kadala and puttu is just a dish nothing related to Onam. We are preparing different kinds of dishes including sweet dishes. Banana leaf is using for eating food and all will sit together and eat food. Tomorrow is (September 2) is Thiruvonam which is the important day and I am taking leave on that day. There are no holidays here, because I am in Delhi. But in Kerala holidays are declared for four days. It is really fun in Kerala and we can't enjoy that much here and just for the sake of kids we are celebrating here. You please reach in time for lunch tomorrow at my home.

I wish you and your people a very happy holiday and wish that it could be that way all year! I have never understood the caste system and why it should be that way but I guess we in America had something similar up to a few decades ago, only it was based on color. I'm glad it's gone.

Hi dear, Thank you very much for your nice wishes and kind words. Actually there are many festivals in Kerala but most of them are related to religion (some are celebrating by Hindu, some by Christian and some by Muslims) but Onam is celebrating by all the people means everybody enjoying and having fun. So this is the festival of religious tolerance, festival of virtue, festival of happiness etc. Have a nice time dear. I am inviting you for lunch tomorrow.

Hi my dear, So you will be cooking variety of foods. Isn't it? For me, The best part of onam ofcourse is 'SADHYA' yummy yummy payasam.. Its tough for me to define the taste of all those delicious foods. I had ate Onam foods in my neighbors home when i was 10 years old. wow.. how taste the foods are.. Still in my tongue. Now no neighbors. Nothing. So I must hear about Onam only from you! I read in a book recently that Onam message is strive to manifest, cultivate and express love, and suppress pride and egoism, so that you can win the grace of God. I wish you a Happy & Prosperous Onam. Have much fun. Have a wonderful time with your family in this Onam festival!
