What is a 2x2 Matrix?

Recently I was reading up on Matrices and Referral programs and the like and was reading about how you can get paid to have people in your downline and upline? I have no idea exactly what a Matrix is - they had 2x2, and 4x4 and I was wondering if anyone had any advice onw hat the heck these tings are, and maybe once I understand it lol if somebody knew of any good sites?

A 2x2 matrix is a system where there are two levels with two people in each and six people in total
An example: you refer 2 people and then they refer 2 people

/\ /\
y y y y
In this example you refer the two people marked with "x".
These two people then refer the people mark "y" ( 2 each)
