What would be your ideal job?

August 31, 2009 5:55pm CST
Growing up I always wanted to be a pilot but was told I couldnt as I have an eye disease that affects my vision. I was pretty gutted. So I decided I would like to be a travel writer but actually ended up becoming a Sport Science Lecturer which is very different to what I had originally imagined! I am now unable to teach as have been diagnosed with MS. So recently have had to re-evaluate what work I could or would like to do. What about you? What job have you always wanted to do? Have you achieved your dream?

As cliche as this is, I always wanted to be a doctor. I got to college and discovered I hated bio.

hey there. It is tough out there at the moment in the job market. It seems to be a global problem. I wish you lots of luck and hope you find work soon. Being unemployed sucks! thanks for the comment.

I have recently graduated from college with a BS in mathematics(about 3 months ago) and like the rest of the recent grads I am unemployed. I was turned on to marketing last summer via a marketing internship with calculators. As a result of that experience, I am trying to land a job in marketing. However, it is very tough out there. I have about 10 interviews. I have always made it to the second round, but then they choose someone else. I have two companies I am waiting on responses from and an interview this Friday. I am supposed to be hearing back from those other two companies at the end of this week or early next week. Hopefully, I will have that job soon.

My ideal job would be me being my own boss and doing something I love to do like making scented candles or writing a book. I would also love to type books for people. You know people who couldn't type. That would be alot of fun I think. Especially since I just love to type. They always say have a job you love to do, so I truly love to type and that would be my ideal job.
2 Sep 09
hey there. that is a lovely idea to type for others. If that is what you love and have a passion for then you should follow that dream. I really hope you can do that. good luck. Thanks for the comment.

I wanted to be an international spy like James Bond...it's a good thing I didn't persuit that since most of them are always getting caught and being thrown in jail for treason or worst they just dissapear.

hey there. Wow what an awesome job that would be. But yeah is a little dangerous I would have imagined. Being able to travel the world, meet lots of women and save the world would be pretty awesome! What job do you have instead? thanks for the comment.

Haha.. being a senior in high school this is basically what has filled my mind for a LONG time. I know i still have plenty of time to decide but still. Anyway, back to the question, my absolute ideal job would basically be not having a real job. basically my all time favorite idea of a "job" would consist of traveling the US, maybe even the world, playing music on the streets for as much money as the charitable people of this world will give me. Funny thing is, if my family had a decent amount of money, i would be on my way to becoming a pilot right now haha.
2 Sep 09
hey there. Ahh still time to decide! Wouldn't it be great if money didnt rule the world and we could just do the things we love 24/7. I think a job that consisted of travelling would be wicked. Any thoughts about what you might be able to do realistically? thanks for the comment.

realistically i honestly dont have a very good idea. generally speaking, i would still love to travel alot so a job that is sort of universally needed. specifically i've been thinking of being a teacher or maybe a mechanic. both of these careers are basically needed everywhere, the economy isnt gonna change the fact that people still need an education and need their car's fixed. well maybe not the second one. but as for now im actually considering going into the peace corps for a few years. i dont know if i'll be able to handle being away from my loved ones but it would be a challenge i would love to take.

hey there. You are right being a teacher is something you can take anywhere with you and always in demand. I learnt how to teach english as a second language and this enabled me to see South Korea, it was an amazing experience. Learning a trade is always worth while and really helps if you want to move abroad. I wish you lots of luck which ever career path you end up taking!

I feel you. I was diagnosed with MS in 2001, and I used to be a college business professor, but my life has changed drastically since my diagnosis. I have had to learn to retrain my skills, and do things I can do in my time-frame, like consulting and some writing projects. I also have a lot of time to think, so I think my IDEAL job would be Queen of the Universe. I'd need to run it all to fix it all, lol. Keep dreaming!
2 Sep 09
hey there. Sorry to hear that you too have MS. It is a tough one to get your head around. I had no idea what it was until I became suddenly ill. I was fine up until the first incidence. IT really does change your life doesnt it. Queen of the Univere hey.... well if you run the world could you please give me my health back and throw a few ££ my way? hahah. thanks for the comment.

I haven't a clue. I'm coming close to the time where I shall need to decide what I want to do, I've even picked college subjects without knowing for sure if they're what I want to do, but I'm finding it very hard to decide. At the moment I'm becoming very interested in History. Perhaps a job within that. I also like to write stories, so maybe that one day although I'm not taking English in college as I'm rather fed up of the apparent need to read every work by William Shakespeare.
2 Sep 09
hey there. I remember how difficult it was decing on subjects when not sure exactly what you want to do. I guess the best thing to do, as you are, is to do things you have an interest in and go from there. haha I never enjoy Shakespeare either! thanks for the comment

Either a musician, businessman, or an online entrepreneur. Anything where I'll be comfortable. In other words, something I'm passionate about that can provide a decent income at the same time.

ok, this is going to sound horrible...but honestly is the best policy...I would like to be born rich, and I mean filthy rich, I would like to spend my days working with charites just out of the goodness of my heart. That5 way I could do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted and could be a bit greedy myself, but would definately spend alot of time and money with charities. I would create a new proffession...professional smiling
2 Sep 09
hey there. Being rich would be great! You sound as though you have a very kind heart and that wealth would not be wasted solely on selfich endeavours. Helping people that need it is a good way to be spendin your time I reckon. Thanks for the comment

I always wanted to grow flowers for profit. So far I haven't achieved it, but I am working toward it. I am now taking classes to be a master gardener. My goal is still along way off. You need a lot af land to grow flowers, and since I only have a tiny yard, it's not achievable at this time.

i always wanted to be a journalist but managed to do some freelance writing over the years for which i got paid. i would have also love to have been just a little more talented than i am and be able to be a starving artist but i do have a real job (i work in an office) but sell my art on the side.
2 Sep 09
hey there. It is always hard for creative people to get paid enough for their work. My partner too is very creative but has to have an office job to survive. It stiffles her creativity. Catch 22! I wish you luck. Thanks for the comment.

I really wanted to be an actress to be an actess when I was growing up. I still do but I have decided to pursue a career which isn't to risque as I am in no financial position to go chasing my dream. I would love to do it though, able to be other people, characters it would be fun. A lot of hard work but fun.

Well, at the moment I have been unemployed since February! I am trained as an actor but have not done anything for several years, due to an illness, which made me have to rearrange a lot of things in my life - at first I wasn't physically able to sustain performing and then after going through a lot of stuff with that it just wasn't top priority anymore, and to do that sort of career it has to be. Dince then I also got married and moved countries! Now, I am getting better and starting to think again about things and to write again, and I guess my ideal would be to have my own theatre company, doing kind of community, theatre in education issue based type stuff. I'd also love to be able to completely work from home set my own hours and never have to answer to a nasty boss again!
2 Sep 09
hey there. I am sorry you have had to re-arrange everything because of an illness. I understand how comepletey frustrating that can be. Congrats on the marriage and I wish you all the luck in getting better and getting back to work. Thansk for the comment.

I always wanted to be a doctor. But I suffered one of the rare eye weakenesses and have to completely drop the idea of being one. I then fell in love with computers and wanted to be a computer professional and so am I today. I am quite pleased with what I do and don't feel very bad not being a doctor. I would have made blunders anyway with the eye condition. I feel that its all destiny that what you become. Everyone doesn't get to be what they want to be. Those who do must consider themselves lucky.
2 Sep 09
hey there. It is great that you are still doing a job you enjoy even if it wasnt your first choice. You are spot on, not everyone does get to do their dream job and those that do are incredibly lucky! I hope you continue to be happy. Thanks for the comment.
