Does anyone have any insight on this site? You have to fill out an application to be a writer, which I haven't seen on any other writing site. Do they give you assignments or are you on your own to write whatever you want like with Associated Content?

There are sites that require you to fill out an application, or at least submit some of your writing. Suite101 does both.
You can write on whatever you want, but it's generally best to stick with the topics that you listed on your application, at least to start with. The suite encourages people to become known for in-depth articles about their subjects, so if you scatter yourself all over the place, the way you can do on Associated Content, you might not get the page views that are necessary for making a decent amount of money. Another advantage of sticking with one or two topics is that there are additional financial and other benefits once you have a good backlog of articles. I don't remember how the page view rates work exactly, but I do know that the percentage you get will go up if you become a specialist (don't remember their term) in one area.

That's actually great news. One thing that frustrates me about AC is that you don't get any special recognition or privilege for focusing on one or two topics primarily, which I do. Other than being a category editor but even then they shuffled me into a category in which I've written three articles out of 100... Occasionally I'll hit on a topic that isn't in my normal focus areas but mostly my articles are all focused on wedding planning and college advice.
I might look into Suite 101. A few more articles earning royalties/page view payments can't hurt, right?

I've been writing for them for a little over 2 years. I'm very happy with them. Even though I'm a Feature Writer for one section, I write articles on any topic that suits my fancy.
Here's my Suite 101 review along with feedback from other Suite writers: http://www.nojobformom.com/2008/03/10/earn-internet-income-freelance-writing-for-suite101com/
Just recently one writer earned just shy of $5,000 for one month. I think you should give it a try.
