Hi there, well i called my father (tatay) my mother (nanay). Its very common in the Philippines. I think those families who are not that rich often used this words to call their parents. Anyway, now i am a mother already and my daughter used to call me "mama" and her father "papa". Its also common here in the Philippines usually in the visayas region (thats what i think) correct me if im wrong, keep on mylotting

Yes that's true kmaram, that is very common in the Philippines especially in the tagalog regions, "tatay" and "nanay", and that how I call them too. "mama" and "papa" is also mostly used in the visayan regions.

This is an interesting topic. Unlike other families, we called our father and mother differently. Apparently there is a reason for this. Called it old wive's tales or superstitions. If we call our parents the traditional way, then some misfortune will come to them as well as to us, the children. So, we called them 'Elder Brother' in place of 'Father' and 'Elder Sister' in place of 'Mother'.This went on until we, the children became adults. We now have our own children. So the last few years we started calling them using the English name of "Father" and "Mother".

We all start calling our mothers in any way one wishes at first, mums are mums and children to them are the same too.I call my mother as mummy and father as daddy,In my place mostly they all call their parents as Amma and Achha, its not a thing that one should be concerned of,its true love that should come out, not only what calling them by sweet words do.Its such a amazing feeling when its our parents who really make us up to life.

We grew up calling our parents Mummy and Daddy. I got my sons to do different. They call us Mama and Papa. It actually sounds nice. I'm from India and I sometimes watch some Hindi serials. There I found parents being called Ayee and Babuji.

Growing up my step mother was "mama" and I called my father "daddy" but now its mom and dad or I call them grandma and grandpa when speaking about them to my children. It just makes me feels silly to continue with the other since I'm now grown.
I know a few kids that even call their parent by the first name but that's usually to their step parents

Thanks for posting this discussion, its fascinating to hear what people in different cultures call their parents, and how it varies within cultures too.
I am English, and always called my parents Mum and Dad. Sometimes I will call my Dad 'Daddy'.
I LIVE in America, so I guess they are MOM and Dad over here!

Hi janebeth,
When my parents were alive, I use to call my fathere daddy and my mother mum, but when I want something from my mum, I used call her mummy and fuss with her, she knew what was coming lol! but my hubby and his siblings used to call their mother by her christain name and I thought that was wron, so when I question my hubby why didn't he call he mum, he just says well Ethel is her name, strange family lol!

I call my mother Mama and Mang..The latter is an Ilonggo dialect in Visayas region or the shorten version of Mamang. Then father is call as a Papa and Tay in a Tagalog dialect as my father is a Tagalog from Luzon region. Filipino dialect. Then, when I am out in a party I call them that is my mom and dad in an English equivalent.

I call them mumma and dad. But its not a hard and fast one. It really depends on my mood. If I have to ask for something then I usually call my mother pamperingly "ma" and father "daddy". In my relation with my parents , calling my father "daddy" gives them an indication that I am looking for some favours and trying to sound more serious. I am not sure if this is what everyone does. :)
