World War Two - 70 years later.

Exactly 70 years ago today the world was changed. This was for many six years of utter terror.. There were 100 million troops involved and at least 61 million lives claimed. For those of us in the British Isles bombs rained down on us night after night. Our lives centered around the bomb shelters built in many of our back yards. On September 1st 1939 Adolf Hitler's troops, under his orders, invaded Poland. This was the beginning of what many now call a racial war. Hitler hated Jews and during the course of the war an estimated 6 million Jews were killed. On September 3rd 1939 Neville Chamberlain, Prime Minister of England requested Germany's withdrawal from Poland. When this did not happen he made the following speech to the citizens of the British Isles. "I am speaking to you tonight from the cabinet room of 10 Downing Street. This morning the British Ambassador in Berlin handed the German Government a final note stating that unless we heard from them by 11 o'clock that they were prepared to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would exist between us. I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at was with Germany." Many of us have memories of the war. Many lost everything in the bombings including family members. Many lost family members who were serving in the military. It is my great hope that nothing to even match the extent of this war ever happens again.

Though it is widely accepted that the WWII began when Germany invaded Poland in 1939, I think it began when Japan invaded Manchuria of China in 1931. For Japan is a member of axis camp, its invasion could be regarded as the beginning of WWII. Each belligerent states, whether belonged to allies or axis camp, suffered a great loss. It's also my hope that human beings could solve their problems by negotiation instead of war.
