Howdy Ya'll mylotterians! Before you say anything, yes I get that hay is for horses. What I don't get, however, I guess you could say, is why when someone says "Hey" some people will say "hay is for horses". I mean, that's obvious, but is it that they just don't like the informal hey or what? Is there any saying, phrase, or maybe even joke you just don't get and why? Does it annoy you when people say it... is it something that is repeated and repeated so much that loses it's luster?

In my teenage years when a guy that we didn't care too much for would say "Hey", we would always respond " Hay is for horses don't you wish you were a stud" Very corny I know but around here it got the point across and they usually left. lol The phrase that I can't stand is "Cute as a button" I mean come on now are buttons really cute and what lunatic decided to start using that phrase? I personally have never looked at a button and thought "Wow that is the cutest button I've ever seen!!!" lol

I want to say that I had an inkling of a thought that there was more to that phrase, but I honestly forgot! I appreciate you clarifying that up for me. I don't know about cute as a button, I guess the button part means "small" as in a child... Hmm, but no buttons are not cute!

because hey sounds like "hay" when you say "hey" people don't now how you're spelling it. so they don't really know if you're saying hay or hey. that one is corny, but i get it. the one i don't get is when you say hello, and people say "hello yourself"

Hmm, I get what your saying but people who I've heard this from, know what I mean when I say "hey"... I guess there just being sarcastic. "hello or hey yourself" I guess it just means "hello to you too" or maybe even "Hello Hottie" lol. I think I've heard, maybe in movies only though, people saying "hello" and the other saying "Hello yourself" in a provocative way, looking up and down the person's body. That's my guess anyway... Anyone else have any idea why people say "hey yourself?"

maybe its the context. if they say Hey. then of course its hello , but if they say Hey? then maybe its like saying "would you like some hay?"

This is a good discussion, and I know horses eat hay,and I know there are a lot of people who like to say hay is for horses, and I am sure why they do this, maybe they do not like saying hey,or maybe they just think it is really funny, and I have heard some jokers add on that grass is free, and I know that that saying gets really old after a period of time and I wish people would stop using it,and I know that sometimes I will say howdy instead of hey just so people can not use that line lol,I love you with all my heart and soul, have a great day, good luck with all of your mylotting goals, and Happy Posting.

I am pretty sure I have heard hay is for horses and grass is free but I can't say that it's that exact wording. I love you!

Yeah I know it might not be the exact wording and the more I think about it I think it actually goes hay is for horses, straw is cheaper and grass is for free lol which it is still annoying, especially when people use it over and over again like it is going out of style,I love you with all my heart and soul, have a great day, good luck with all of your mylotting goals, and Happy Posting Baby.

There are definitely people who do not like informal speech in certain situations and it really is not appropriate at work or in the classroom or any other formal setting. While some people are appropriate in their expressions in all situations some are not. Saying hay is for horses in response to someone you feel is unsophisticated for saying "hey" is petty and small.

In some situations it comes down to considering the source when deciding whether to say something or to even be offended by a remark, whether it be informal or formal.
