We used to spend way too much money on long weekends, then we realized that there were things that we could do together that don't require too much money and give us better quality time together. One thing is if there is a local nature area around where you live, you could go hiking. It is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and it is free in most cases. Another thing that is a lot of fun is to play some board games with your family. We also like to go out for long family bike rides, those kind of things.

well, here in north america, it will be a long weekend because its labour day on monday then the kids head back to school on tuesday. a lot of people go up to their cottage or go camping for the last weekend of summer. we are planning to spend it cleaning our house!
what about being a tourist in your own city? thats always fun and not that expensive.

Movies and boardgames are great ideas. And we love the outdoors, so we go camping, hiking, fishing, we take picnics to the river, we camp in the back yard. Projects can be fun and inexpensive also. One weekend we let the kids build some tree swings. They each had to plan it out, draw a picture, gather their materials and then us parents helped out with knot tying and hole drilling. It was a lot of fun. Neighborhood block parties are fun too and everyone helps out with food and watching the kids. I also have a closet that is just for gathering garage sale items, then when it gets full enough I hold a yard sale. Sometimes the neighbors get in on it to, a long weekend is a great time to hold a yard sale, then you can make more than you spend.
