I really didnt Expect my dog to figure this out

The other day My momma cat was killed so I've been putting dishes of crunchies, water and soft food under the building they live under. They are pretty wild so I only catch glimpses of them. I got tired of loosing my dishes so on the weekend i took some string and some plastic containers and tied them to the building so i could put the food under but pull the dish back out when i wanted to put food in it. I went out and fed the kittens again this morning, first feeding the dogs. I gave Zeus his and Mackenize his. Zeus gets "semi" soft food because soft stuff gives him the runs. After i was done putting the kitten food under the building i put the ropes back under and tucked the board back over the hole. I went inside ate my breakfast and went out to leave for work. Well Zeus was eating the kitten food he had pulled the rope til; the dish worked its way out. I was so mad. He terrorizes those poor kittens enough already he doesnt need to be stealing their food too. Zeus will eat until he barfs then eat some more. He was a SPCA dog which They told me he was beaten and starved before they got him at the spca so i'd have to watch his eating habbits. I refed the kittens (was late for work but im not letting animals starve on my farm!) started to leave turned my head and he was right back there with the strings. SO i hollered at him and he took off so i moved the big wheel barrow infront of their feeding spot. Hopefully those little guys got some food in them. I really didnt expect him to figure out that if he pulled the string the food dish would come out. Have you ever had a dog do something like that?

The only dogs I've ever had are chihuahua's, and when they want fed they're smart enough to know when to ask... well that is we'll say something, or someone else we'll say "go tell Blah blah to feed ya'll" and they will... Or "go tell blah blah to take you outside and they will... chihuahua's we have now bark at deer and horses, and our neighbors EVEN THOUGH THEY'VE SEEN THEM I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY TIMES. I know I should know what SPCA stands for, but couldya tell me? Thanks Toodles.

Thanks Hatley. It always seems that Zeus goes for the food that he shouldnt have...the cat food or my older dog's food...the kind that gives him terrible runs. (not a smart move on his part!)

I knew I should have known what SPCA stood for. Thanks Hatley for telling me! Our dogs will eat things that make them sick too, I guess it's like humans... It's good so we'll eat it even if it does make us stay in the bathroom for awhile.

Once an animal sees how they get treats they will mimic anyone anytime. I've see all aninmals dogs, cats, birds, fish , chickens, goats, sheep, horSes the list can go on forever. All an aminal needs is a treat ,affection or just so they can do it. Now your problem can be solved until your dog figures it out again. Get a broom handle attach an eyelet at each end feed the rope through and place the handle under the lowest piece . The handle will jam against the bowl and your dog will be frustrated. Hopefully the dog will give up.. REMEMBER ALWAYS LUV/CARE FOR YOUR DOG/PET, THEY WILL ALWAYS LUV U ..

Dogs are a lot "smarter" (or bigger smartasses) than we give them credit!! LOL I can't remember right now, bot our dog used to do all kinds of smartassed things growing up. Dogs can do stuff like that. My cat's kindof a smartass too, knowing exactly how and when to pick on my husband when he's trying to get some work done.

LOL my cat used to pick on my sister - he'd torment her by laying just outside her bedroom door watching her - he Knew he wasnt allowed in her room so he would wait til she wasnt looking and sneak under her bed.

hi saundyl I havent ever day a dog do that, but I know the little fellows are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. a number of years back I was working as a nurses aide in Rapid City and going home on the weekends on the bus. well I had a dog I left at home with my parents who was very much my' dog.well that dog knew the exact time that the bus would pass at the road into our farm. She would see the bus stop, watch me get off and start walking that quarter of a mile to our house then her she came at a gallop head up high and tail wagging. She never once 'missed the timing and how she knew nobody could explain.

Thats so cool! We had...have a cocker spaniel when i was growing up (hes 18 now) he always was waiting at the end of the driveway for us when we got off the school bus. My mom's dogs will bark before i ever get to the yard...not an angry bark but the excited someone i like is coming barks. Mom figures they can hear the car slow down and drive down the half mile before im there. I've seen them do it for my sisters too.

Hey saundly! Haven't you figured out that Zeus is just way too smart! He probably watches YOU pulling the ropes out to put the food in the dishes! Then he does the same thing! He just is a very smart dog! And as you said, he has a problem with being afraid that he isn't going to get enough food which is not really his fault! It is a shame that he hasn't forgotten or outgrown his abuse even after all this time that you have had him. It really is so sad that he was abused and starved! I think that the only way to keep him from stealing the kittens food is by feeding them and watching to make sure he doesn't get the food, which of course would be next to impossible because you would have to keep watching for a long time until the babies ate it themselves!

I would have to be a very very patient person to wait for them to eat it. They dont come to the food until I'm a good 10 feet away from the building (i can see them run if i get any closer!)I might have to resort to tying Zeus up when i feed them so they get a chance to eat without him stealing it or tormenting them. I hope that he does get over his fear someday. Somethings take time i guess. Hes way less chewy than he was when i got him and he comes to me now even if my dad or a male friend or cousin is standing near me....originally when i got him you couldnt get him to come to you if you were near a male!

I think that dogs are very smart animals. When my dog looses interest in his ball I take the ball into the kitchen. I bounce the ball and catch it in both hands. I do this until I get tired and miss it. My dog is right there ready to catch it. It's like he knows when I'm going to miss it.

I like the shows where they show pets who saved their owners. Its so cool and neat to see what they saved them from and how. Or that they can predict say a seizure.

A dog that has been starved will do just about anything for food, even if it threatens their life. Put that together with the fact that dogs are a lot smarter then we think and you have the magic combination for loss of kitty food. Blessings

Whats really funny is - he has free access to crunchies all the time (dog crunchies) but he goes after the cat ones. I'm not sure why he wants them instead but he does!

Wow! Your dog sounds really smart! That is a very clever thing for him to figure out to do! My two dogs i have at the moment are quite good when it comes to food. We have one boy and one girl. The boy is totally obsessed with food, but he is so obidient around it! We can leave the lid off their food bin and he can be sitting by it for ages and wont eat any! Our old dog would have had his head in it and have eaten all of it by that point! Our old dog was the only one who's done anything funny with food! I remember the morning after the day we got him we all came down in the morning and he was sitting on a chair at the table waiting for his breakfast lol! Silly dog. And also i used to compete in agility competitions with him. It was our first ever dog show and we were going round ok till we got to this one corner. He smelt the bacon cooking from the burger van round the corner and he jumped over the fence and ran off to get food lol. And also at another dog competition the judges had some biscuits in their little tent and he smelt them and ran off sniffing around the tent. I was like 12 at the time and he was quite a big dog. I stood calling him for ages and then i got fed up so i went inside the tent. Everyone who was watching was around the tent and couldnt see. I picked him up and walked out the tent with him and everyone was laughing, because of the size differnce lol. We won a "Judges special" award on that one. Guess they felt bad for having food and attracting his attention!

That is so awesome. Reading your story made me smile! I dont think i could leave the lid off the dog treats - crunchies yes for the most part but any treats would be gone in seconds (if someone dropps stuff in the ditch he brings it into the yard)

Haven't you heard 'dogs and humans go along',may be dogs are clever than many other animal out there. The other animals like Elephants,Dolphins ,fox are clever too but since we go with dogs most of the time, instead of keeping the other mentioned as pets, the dogs learn quick. They are keen on what we do,most of the time they can understand what we are up to and they react upon that.

Hey there... Dogs can be quite clever and resourceful animals. My min pin came with us to visit my parents in Washington state, and while we all decided to leave for lunch one day, we decided to put her in the laundry room, since it had a sliding door. We figured she knew how to open a hinged door, so a sliding door would surely hold her. Not so. Coming home, we found she had helped herself to the whole bowl of Christmas candy, which happened to be...chocolate!!! To this day, whenever she can get her mouth to some chocolate, it's a lost cause...and to this day, she's as healthy as ever... Enjoy your animals! Dive Deep!

Oh thats good that the chocolate didnt harm her! My Mom's cocker spaniels used to be able to get the sliding door open at my grandmas between the living room and dining room. They took to putting a board between the door and where the dogs were so they couldnt get it open.
