Would YOU Slit Your Wrist For (Or WITH) Michele Bachmann?

Rep. Michele Bachmann, who has said she's proud to be the "second most hated Republican woman", gave a speech in Denver yesterday that really sounded like something out of a slasher film, as the writer of the article below suggests. Here are some excerpts: DENVER — In a fiery speech that had her conservative Colorado audience cheering, U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann railed against the dangers of health care reform and other Democratic initiatives, warning the proposals “have the strength to destroy this country forever.” “This cannot pass,” the Minnesota Republican told a crowd at a Denver gathering sponsored by the Independence Institute. “What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing. This will not pass. We will do whatever it takes to make sure this doesn’t pass.” (End of excerpt) The article continues with this: Bachmann earlier this month joined former U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, the Republican ousted from office last year by Markey, in a telephone town hall where she told abortion opponents the health care “battle will be won – on our knees in prayer and fasting.” At times, Bachmann’s legislative briefing sounded more like the plot of a slasher movie. “Right now, we are looking at reaching down the throat and ripping the guts out of freedom,” she said. “And we may never be able to restore it if we don’t man up and take this one on.” http://coloradoindependent.com/36840/bachmann-slit-our-wrists-be-blood-brothers%E2%80%99-to-beat-health-care-reform She made the claim that she won in "Franken country"; please tell me, how could that be? Is this woman for real? Annie

Oh, she's for real. I'm from Minnesota and every time that woman opens her mouth I cringe. She has a long history of saying the most outrageous things that make run of the mill conservatives look really liberal and thoughtful. She's very divisive and makes partisan disagreements personal and mean.

Welcome to myLot, sehlers! At least you don't get bored stiff by your politicians in Minnesota, do you? It seems you've always had some "characters" - and I don't mean that always in a bad way. Annie

Yes, completely unlike the kind and respectful Al Franken who happily makes jokes about helping al Quaeda assassinate the president. The people of Minnesota just need to stop voting for extremists.

I'm still not clear on why you care so much. She wasn't a VP candidate, She doesn't represent anyone in your state, she's just a congresswoman who is rather low on the totem pole, and if you must concern yourself with crazy politicians from Minnesota, your efforts would be better spent worrying about the man who thinks it would be funny to help al Quaeda assassinate the president.

Taskr, I'm pretty sure you've started discussions about politicians from outside your own state, haven't you? If not, I'm not a liar, just forgetful...lol! It's really not that I "care so much" but that I felt it would make for a good discussion. It's interesting how I end up spending most of the time I spend responding to my discussions JUSTIFYING those discussions and I just might not do that anymore. I know you hate Al Franken. I never saw him tell the joke you've often referenced but I've said more than once that I think it was an awful thing to say, in poor taste and not funny. However, since he's become Senator Franken he's seemed to be quite responsible, articulate and intelligent in that capacity. I have no idea what Bachmann ever did before going to Congress or how she acts outside of that role but just about every time I've heard her open her mouth she's said something incredibly stupid and/or outrageous, which is the sort of thing I like to discuss here. Spicy, that's a very sweet story! I can see how that would help make a young child feel more self-confident. Annie

"Taskr, I'm pretty sure you've started discussions about politicians from outside your own state, haven't you?" Fair enough, but you really have it in for this woman. Only Sarah Palin occupies more of your attention, and that's odd to me since Bachmann really is low on the political ladder. "I never saw him tell the joke you've often referenced" I've posted it for you a dozen times WITH subtitles so if you haven't watched it, that's because you don't want to. Either way the worst things Bachmann has said still don't compare to Franken's behavior. What he said about helping his "friends" at al Quaeda is the worst he's said, but it's just another disgusting statement by a guy with a long history of such filth.

I can never help but like Al Franken but I can't help it because I have fond memories tied to him. When i was in third grade, I did not fit in, I had no friends and so I hated going to school, i felt so bad about myself. But my mom and I had watch Stuart Smalley saturday night live skits and the movie. And so every morning, my mom would walk me to school and i would get so scared and nervous, and she would tell me to say the line "im good enough, im smart enough, and doggonit, people like me". And I would feel so much better and confident . So yes, Al franken might be a jerk sometimes, and might be higher up than Michelle Bachman, but I highly doubt Bachmans words helped a little girl get through the school day .

This woman is just wacky. I read the article, and its just so ranting and raving, and she just sounds like a kook to me. It is also disturbing the things she says, sliting wrists, being a covenant, calling income tax "slavery", shes also proud that she is one of the most hated republicans. I just think it sounds silly when ANYONE says they are glad that they are so disliked, it makes them just look smug in my opinion. And after all of her ranting and raving, she also says “Something is way crazy out there,”. I think she needs to look in the mirror to see something crazy

"I just think it sounds silly when ANYONE says they are glad that they are so disliked" I'm not one to quote Paris Hilton, but this is so applicable it MUST be said. “When people you don't even know hate you, that's when you know you're the best.”

She's about as wacky as they come! She wanted to have all the "liberal" members of Congress investigated for being "anti-American". Regarding Paris Hilton, I gained a new respect for her after the made her video about energy...lol! Annie

Blood covenants figure heavily in more than one religion's historical tradition. Often, when one is trying to make a point, it is useful to use symbolic language. By saying that they should slit their wrists to make a covenant, she is implying an agreement that binds people together in a common purpose. It's a lot more effective than saying "gosh guys, we ought to stick together on this". It is along the same religious theme as prayer and fasting. Since she was speaking to a group in an unofficial capacity, there's no problem with separation of church and state here. “Right now, we are looking at reaching down the throat and ripping the guts out of freedom,” she said. “And we may never be able to restore it if we don’t man up and take this one on.” She's actually referencing those who support the health care bill here when she speaks of ripping the guts out of freedom. She's not advocating slashing, she's saying we have to defend ourselves against the slasher. I was a bit disappointed, I thought after reading the title of this discussion it was going to be some juicy gossip about vampires in Congress or something. Is she for real, you ask? Yes, I believe she is for real. I think she really opposes this health care reform. I think she really wants to impress the dangers she perceives upon her audience.

Carson, nobody is bashing her for being religious, but this is the 21st century and so talking about sliting wrists and being blood brothers is weird to a lot of people, including myself. And there are people in the country, republican people even, who may not agree with that sort of religious reference. There is no place for religion in politics in my opinion, it is just mixing in pre-thought ideas when one should try and be open to new ones and try to represent people as a whole, and not just those who share religion. No one is bashing the fact that she is religious, but she can still be religious without using overdramatic statements. This is 2009, where people have all types of religion, Michelle Bachman is just over the top

Perhaps her constituents understood her referrence? I agree, it was a strange thing to say in the context it was said...I'm looking for a reason she may have used it. Was the group perhaps a religious one? It certainly is not weirder than other things I have heard from politicians...at other times though.Just weird that she would metaphorically 'slit her wrists' by referring to such a 'religious' thing as a blood covenant.

I have heard this woman on the Mark Levin Show. I like her alot. She is a true Conservative. What she said on his program was very mainstream. She is a bare knuckle fighter for freedom. I know this comment will not help my horrible rating but I will stick up for the people I believe in. I am proud to say I am one of her supporters. I know she believes in GOD. What a freak! Go ahead and BASH her!

Divide and conquer. It's working real well. Why do we pick apart those who are different and expect everyone to be just like ourselves?

What ever happened to being reasonable and rational? There's something in between being "just like everybody else" and being nuts like Michele Bachmann. Annie

I never heard of that woman before, but I now that I have read that article I can say that she is plain and simply crazy. It is just as if she feeds off the hate from other people and tries to make everything worse. To answer your question, No! I wouldn't slit my wrist with/for her or anyone else.

I agree, she does feed off the hate from other people and no matter what the issue is she has a way of talking about it that sounds dangerously close to inciting violence, in my opinion. Annie

I'm not going to respond to the specific question, because I know your smart enough to realize it was figurative speech on her part, bizzare as it was. I am still trying to figure this Bachman woman out. Yeh, she comes off as a bit of a nut, but I have come to expect this from Minnisota, after all, this is the same state that elected Jessie Ventura and Al Frankin and next to those two, Bachman looks pretty normal, lol. I will say this much, as nutty as she comes off, she is at least on the right side of the constitution and our nation's republican (not the party) principals. she is certainly no Ron Paul, but right now, I'll take what ever we can get.

X, I have to disagree with you; in my opinion, next to Bachmann, Franken and Ventura seem to be as run-of-the-mill as they come! Thank you for giving me credit for my intelligence...lol...of course I know it was figurative but I still figure the woman's nuts! Annie

al franken - Al Franken shows his nature
Well annie, when Bachman does something like THIS(the franken photo), or when she starts claiming as Jessie ventura did that the cia had covert planted operatives in his governor's office and following him all over the place, I'll reconsider my assesment.

I would say it is impossible for a representative to truly be 100% representative of every person they represent. There is always going to be something that sets them off as a person. I agree with xfahctor that as long as they are on the right side of the Constitution...we should support them in their efforts.

If she did it the country would be a lot better off. She is way out in right field. That's where we put the ball players who can't field and probably can't hit. I wonder if Minnesota is proud of such a representative?

Amen. I really don't think she's stable at all, in fact she and Mark Sanford should probably go off to Argentina together. Of course, Sanford's soul mate might not like that too much... Annie
