I was brought up in a poor family, and never received gift until I was about eight, it's a nice rag doll from one of my relative. I was so happy at that time, and now I still can feel the joy that gift brought me. And you, any gift that bring you great joy?

I can't say that I can remember my first gift but I can remember the most special gift I ever recieved as a matter of fact I still have it. When I was young I grew up in a coal mining town in Eastern Kentucky. Many of the families were living below the poverty level to say the least. My family was not by any means a rich family but we lived in the middle ground between poverty and wealth. I got this gift when I was in the 1st grade. It was Christmas time and we had drawn names at school. The gift was to be no greater than $10. Back in those days a $10 gift was a big deal. I had drawn the name of a boy who would have been considered a "poor" kid even for Eastern Kentucky. The boy that drew my name was one of 10 children and came from one of the poorest families that had children in my school. My mother sat me down and talked to me about his family situation and how I should not expect an expensive gift and to be happy with whatever his family could afford. Even then I understood what she ment and made up my mind to be happy with whatever I got. When the last day of school before Christmas break came we got to have a party and exchange gifts. I had bought a fire engine that made noises and had lites for the gift I was giving. When the boy giving me my gift handed it to me I could hear the other children snickering because they were sure I would get a "crappy" gift. I smiled big at the boy and began to open the gift already knowing I was going to be pleased no matter what. As I unwrapped my gift from its home inside a taped up brown paper sack from the local grocery store my anticipation grew even though I knew it was not going to be an expensive gift. After all it was a gift, someone had bought me a gift. When the brown paper fell to the floor I was delighted to find a small hard plastic doll. She had brown hair and was wearing a yellow rain hat and coat that buttoned up the front along with some hard plastic white rain boots. She was not a fancy doll and she only came wrapped in clear plastic with a cardboard piece to hang it on a hook. I had seen them before in the store and was aware that they were the cheapest doll in the store. While the other children were snickering at the cheap doll that I had gotten as a gift, I looked up at the boy with the biggest smile I could put across my face and told him how much I loved the doll and that I had been wanting one just like it even if it weren't the truth he didn't have to know that. I then turned away to my desk finished taking the doll from the package and began to play with her. All the other children were showing off what they got and checking out the other children's gifts. No one was interested in my gift so I got to play with it all by myself without sharing. It was my gift, a small gift, an inexpensive gift, but by no means was this a cheap gift. It was a gift given from the heart of a boy from a poor family that probably could not afford to even get the toy for the exchange. To me that made it a priceless gift. After all I still have that doll. Of all the toys that came and went as I was growing up I always hung on to that gift for it ment more to me than all the others combined.
