How do you overcome the fear of flying?

My fiance and I both have never flown in a plane. The first time that we will be able to be in a plane will be on our way to our honeymoon. I am terrified of flying and anything that could happen while in flight. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get through it? I definitly want to be awake for the whole flight, so no drugs or sleeping. I think I would be more of a wreck if I knew I wouldn't be able to react to anything. Just looking for some assistance. Thanks!

Hi Kittens, you'll find that after the endless waiting around at the airport with the long check in times, and then the bother of the children kicking your seats from the moment that you actually sit down, that by the time the plane actually moves you'll be too bored or annoyed to be bothered at all by any fear of flying.

I suggest a light meal before you fly. Sit on the aircraft where you will feel most comfortable. Then when the plane takes off you and your spouse could hold hands and chat. On landing you could close your eyes and think lovely thoughts. I think a deep breath and a smile could help you. My might want to listen to music on the head phones during the flight. Good luck. I hope that you will have an excellent honeymoon.

Just relax. That's the best advice that I can give you. Look at it this way, you are more likely to be killed driving to the airport than you are flying. I've flown thousands of miles including more trans - Atlantic crossings than I can remember. I always take a book or two to read, that helps me to relax and passes the time as well.
