Which Do You Prefer To Eat - Grilled Cheese or Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich?

United States
September 2, 2009 3:12pm CST
If I was still 7 years old, it would take me at least 45 minutes to decide which one I wanted for my late night snack. Yes, I stayed up late at 8 years young, but no one knew about that but me and a good friend (and now mylotters), because she was up with me. But anyway, I hardly ever buy peanut butter anymore, but I keep jelly close by to eat with my eggs and big fluffy biscuits. But when it comes to grilled cheese, I absolutely love it! I usually eat two instead of one, it depends on what my stomach wants. I know some people use oil rather than butter/margarine when cooking a grilled cheese sandwich, but I only use oil if I don't have margarine/butter. Okay enough about me, what about you mylotters? Do you prefer grilled cheese or peanut butter and jelly? and how do you fix it up for taste?

Ummmmmmmmm. toasty! I prefer the grilled cheese. But I usually grill the cheese on open faced large bun, then when toasted, add the lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers or whatever. Love it. But Peanut butter and jelly is scrumptious too.

Yummy! That sounds mouth watering, a big toasty bun with all those tasty ingredients added it, including the cheese. That's how I like my bun when I cook juicy cheese burgers,

Hey Miracle, When I was really young I used to be obsessed with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. When I grew older I grew out of those sandwiches and started to eat cheese on toast, though never in sandwiches. If I have grilled cheese between bread it tends to be on top of fish fingers or chicken burgers as I prefer it like that lol! As for fixing it up I tend to have lots of cheese and then maybe some Worcester sauce on the top for some extra tang. I think my brother taught me that trick, I also always make sure the cheese is browning on the top to add that little bit of extra taste. I don't use butter or anything either, and really like it when the oils from the cheese soak into the bread, the crusts with the oils in are completely addictive lol! All the best :) Dranz

What's up DCLehnsherr? Oh my goodness! That's something new and interesting. Although plain grill cheese is good, I like to try something out of the box I've never tried before. I might get addicted too. I'm very tempted to try that.

Uhh goodness, I have never got anyone addicted to something before, you have to try it lol. Don't put too much on though if you do, it can be quite a strong taste. Just add a little Worcester sauce to a corner after you have grilled the cheese a little and put it back under until the cheese is to the level you want it at. With the crusts (the best bit) the trick is to start cooking slowly and then increase the heat until it is at full temperature. It does something nice to the oils that gives it the lovely taste and a tougher texture. I don't have a clue what to call it but trust me that it rocks, though it does mean you have to the eat the crusts separately to savour the flavour lol If you try it let me know how it goes, I am curious now lol :) Dranz

I really don't like peanut butter, and I only like jam or jelly on pancakes. I love cheese so I guess for me this is an absolute no-brainer. I'd rather have a grilled cheese sandwiches, than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, any day. My husband likes peanut butter, so we keep it around the house for him to eat. He can eat it all, and he does...right out of the jar!!!

We always called them "toasted cheese sandwich" and I'd pick that over PBJ every time! I never did like jelly with my PB. I like to put a slice of cheddar and one of Swiss on the sandwich. Yummy! If I'm being really diet conscious I'll skip the margarine and use butter flavored pan spray on the bread but it's not as crispy as when margarine is used.

I need to take some tips from you about being healthy and yummy at the same time. Almost everything I eat is either fatty or just plain bad for me, but sooooo delicious!

I'm constantly battling my weight! It's self defense to figure out ways to save fat and calories. I need to drop another 40 pounds and then I'll be okay. Try the spray--it won't be as crispy but it's just as delicious! Also, I love PB!!! But I toast a piece of bread and spread it VERY thinly with PB so that I get all the taste but not as much PB as is usually spread on a sandwich.

I was born with a fat trait, meaning I spend too much time trying to drop the next pound. Most of the time I end up gaining it right back. Maybe I need some weight loss tips.

For sure grilled cheese. I can not stand peanut butter and jelly. Ughhh!!! I have used peanut butter in other ways. Peanut butter and butter, peanut butter and mayo, peanut butter inside of a grilled cheese. My granson helped me with that one.

I rarely eat jelly or jam or preserves on toast or bread if i do. It always grossed me out as a kid when my sibling used to eat it. Ughh then they came out with that goober jelly. It is just like the name. Goooooober. Mostly Goooooo. Mmmmm i love peanut butter. I eat peanut butter sometime just off the spoon. And that chocolate peanutbutter. Its so good its like a sin.

Well you're not missing out on anything. Since I've been an adult, I just stop caring about peanut butter, which is not a bad thing because it makes me fat anyway.

Well that's definitely a pretty tough choice I've always been a pretty big fan of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or just a peanut butter sandwich with milk. Grilled cheese always hit the spot though to especially with tomato soup or when you cook some vegetables into the grilled cheese. Either way you're ending up with something pretty good to eat

Both kinds of sandwiches are comfort food. For a twist I have taken a pbj (peanut butter on both sides of the bread, jelly in between) and dipped them in milk and egg, like french toast and grilled them. Very decadent.

What's up with this grilled cheese and tomato soup? It must be crazy delicious! I think this is the third or fourth time I've heard that today. I gotta see what this is all about. The next time I whip up a grilled cheese sandwich, I might shoot for some tomato soup and vegetables with it.

When my son was little, I used to make grilled cheese and tomato soup. I cut the grilled cheese into strips, that he dunked into the soup. At 25, he still likes it that way.

Hey enola! How you're doing? I see a lot of people will prefer grilled cheese over peanut butter and jelly, and swiss cheese is all that and a bag of cheese puffs.

I would have to say that I LOVE grilled chesse. I have never liked peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Even growing up given that opition I would always choose grilled chesse. I'm not a fan of peanut butter. I never have been either. My children love eating both of those and could really care less about which one they got to eat. You actually got me wanting a grilled chesse now. I think I just might go make one or maybe two. Here's my late night snack coming or should I say late night dinner. LOL.

Take your time and grub! But don't eat too fast, you want to taste every bite. I'm full now, I already had dinner, some fried chicken and shells and cheese. Yummy!

For a late night snack, I'd go for the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, only because you don't have to cook anything. Any other time, I'd have to go by what my body wants. I'm as eclectic in my food cravings as I am in the type of music I like and the clothes I wear. Either peanut butter and jelly or grilled cheese sound good to me right now so I'd have a hard time deciding. But, I do like to have tomato soup with my grilled cheese sandwiches. Also, if I'm especially hungry, I toss in some tuna salad and have a tuna melt with the tomato soup. Oh, geez. Now, I'm hungry! I've been feeling yucky all day because I woke up with a monster of a headache, only to find out not long after that it was the beginning of a nasty cold. I really haven't been hungry all day but now I am. Thanks. LOL Actually, I'd like to toss one more thing into this discussion: soft-boiled eggs in toast. My mother used to make that for my sister and me when we were young if we weren't feeling well. She'd make the toast, crumble it up into chunks and add the egg, stirring it all up. YUM!!!!! It has been one of my favorite "comfort foods" since that time. But, at the moment, I am inundated with tomatoes! I had trouble in the early Spring when I planted my tomato plants in that they were all washed away from all the rain we had. My second planting was only 2 regular tomato plants and one cherry tomato plant. But these plants have been over-producing since then! Right now, I have about 12 tomatoes in my kitchen, all quite ripe, with another half-dozen on the vine that could be picked now. The reason I mentioned that is that I have to figure ways to incorporate tomatoes into everything I eat, one way or another, or they'll go bad. Hmmm, grilled cheese and tomato? That actually doesn't sound too bad! I might try that. I have had plans to make spaghetti sauce from scratch and canning or freezing it but, with this cold hitting me so fast and so hard, I doubt I'll get to it. I've already given my sons more tomatoes than they can handle. Maybe I'll feel up to it tomorrow. Otherwise, it's tomato sandwiches for me... all day, every day.

I didn't think of that, it is much easier and quicker to throw together a peanut butter and jelly sandwich than it is to grill a delicious grilled cheese, but I would really have to suck it up and satisfy my cravings. Plus I can get my husband to whip up two quick grilled cheeses for me. Heck he's faster than a speed of lightening, you'll think he just made one peanut butter sandwich. Now that's FAST....HE HE!

Wow! That's definitely a plus for your husband! Mine is typical and has to ask where everything is, then how long to cook everything, then I have to give the okay when it's done, whatever he tries to cook except for spaghetti. Of course, I always end up cleaning everything up afterward, too. Sigh. I guess he's better than my best friend's husband. He can't fix anything! She spoiled him rotten when they were first married so now, when she's not feeling well or just plain tired, he still comes to her and asks her when she's going to cook something. Now, THAT'S bad, when a man can't even fix a sandwich for himself!

Lol this is an interesting post! I tend to stay away from peanut butter, not because I don't like it - I love peanut butter but it is just so fattening! I love cheese in any form though, and even though I know too much cheese is no good for me either, I'd probably choose the grilled cheese!

That would be one thing that keeps me away from peanut butter (fat). I gain extra weight very easily and it's extra hard to lose it. Cheese happens to be one of my favorite foods. I can always find something to do with it. It brings out the best in foods.

I would prefer the grilled cheese sandwich. In my older years I have added a little extra to it. When I am making the sandwich, use about a sprinkle or two of dried onions on top of the cheese. This gives that grilled cheese sandwich a whole new taste. YUM YUM..Okay Im off to make a sandwhich,,,yes it is going to be a grilled cheese with onions..

Hmmm. Grilled cheese with onions huh? Very interesting. I only like onions on certain foods, and I prefer it cooked rather than raw. I think it may be good on grilled cheese though. I might give it a try.

I would choose peanut butter.Because I have always liked to eat peanut production of food.Fry,especially after the crushed peanuts and sesame seeds, and then sprinkle some salt, then taste, but the real.We call it sesame salt..Cheese is also very good to eat.but I eat a lot of stomach feed uncomfortable.

My dad is crazy about peanuts, but he mainly eats peanut butter cookies rather than the peanut butter by itself. Don't get me wrong, we like peanut butter, but we can enjoy it better in cookies.

Grilled cheese for me please! When I moved to America, from England, to make my American husband happy I did try PB and J sandwiches, though I did not understand why anyone would do anything that disgusting. 'I have moved to this country' I thought - 'I must learn their ways! Its wrong for me to condemn the national sandwich without trying it'. So I did. And I was right. I will not be eating another one.....lol... I did eat peanut butter in England, but over here its like one of the basic food groups! I probably do eat more now as we always have it in the house for my husband, for his PB an J's and his fluffernutters (again....EEEW!)

He he! When I was a child I was eating just about all types of sandwiches, even food I can't believe I ate, like chicken liver. Yuck!!!!! Now I wouldn't touch it with a 12 foot pole.

I like grilled cheese the best though I like peanut butter too. I like my grilled cheese cooked in butter, real butter. I sprinkle a little garlic salt on the cheese and add a super thin slice of tomato and then fry it in the butter. It is delicious and now I'm hungry for one! LOL

hmm. This is hard. I think I would prefer grilled cheese in the mornings and peanut butter and strawberry jelly in the evenings. I can't pick just one. I guess I'm still a 7 year old girl inside. I also use butter/margirine. I have never used oil for my grilled cheese before. I like the butter because it gives it the flaky buttery taste.

Hey kiddo! How are you doing? Is everything working out well for you? Grilled cheese is ok, especially with tomato soup. Grilled PB&J however, is the food of the Gods...lol. Grilling it makes the peanut butter all melty and gooey. I think I could live on peanut butter and (seedless) blackberry jelly. My son is a grilled cheese fanatic though. He likes a triple grilled cheese, using American, cheddar and swiss cheeses. Instead of butter or oil, he spreads a small amount of mayo on the bread. It gives it a homemade, eggy flavor. Have you tried that?

What's up catdla1? It's good to see you. I'm doing good, and still sitting here smiling away. Did you read the other responses here? Grilled Cheese and tomato soup seems to be one of the top dogs. Some one else mentioned grilled peanut butter and jelly. I gotta try that. No I never heard of spreading mayo on the bread. I guess I have a lot to try huh?

no I cannot choose between the two. Some days I would want one some day the other. Does everyone not know that cheese contains about 25% butterfat already? You do not have to put extra butter on.

I love grilled cheese. I find it a lot better than peanut butter and jelly. Of course, I'm usually too lazy to actually make grilled cheese, so I always end up with the inferior sandwich.
