Who else was sad about Pluto being demoted from being a real planet?

The announcement was made 3 years ago and it literally and figuratively messed with my universe. It was like losing childhood all over again (what? lol). Well, that was the time when I learned about the fascinating world beyond the world I knew, the time when Uranus jokes were funny... Anyway, I do revertigo (pls refer to episodes of HIMYM for definition, lol) posts on my blog and I somehow mentioned Pluto and how it will always be a planet in my heart (the post was actually about old Hi-C commercials and Alyssa Milano - http://spinninglovelydays.blogspot.com/2009/09/this-weeks-revertigo-hi-c-and-alyssa.html). I was surprised to receive a comment from a woman who said that there is actually a campaign to restore Pluto to its planet status, that the controversial IAU's decision was made by a mere 4% of its membership and most of this percentage were not planetary scientists. Anyway, there's even a song made for Pluto and the injustice it suffered, lol. It's a catchy tune too. You can listen to it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlkYe613Dns (Dwarf Planet Nothin' - The Pluto Song). Anyway, how did you feel when you learned about Pluto's demotion? Will you support this campaign to restore it to its former status? I want to, but I need to learn more about this. And also, FYI, Pluto's my favorite Mickey Mouse Clubhouse character. :D

Pluto will forever and always remain a planet in my heart. I was quite upset about it. And think of the space books and encyclopedias that still have it listed there. I really hope it is restored to it's planetary status. I'd like to teach my kid about all the planets, not the planets plus to giant mass also in our solar system.

I know! It's a package! With Pluto not included, it's like one of the main characters in a play missing.

I don't think they needed to kick pluto off the planet's list... That was mean. So what if it's too small? It was discovered by someone and named and everything. It was part of the family =( Maybe we should make something called the Original Solar System where Pluto is included in it... =D

Yeah, we'd be all, "This is our generation's solar system, we have that cute little Pluto" and we'd be the cool ones, lol

I was a little sad about it, but to me, if the scientists make the call, I will let them. They know more about the difference between planets and non-planets to me. Sentimentally, however, I wish it was still a planet.

That's how I felt in the beginning too, but an amateur astronomer just told me that the majority of those who made that call were not even planetary scientists.

Pfft. As far as I'm concerned, Pluto is still a planet. Who cares what a whopping four percent of the IAU scientists claim? 96% of the scientists didn't agree, apparently. I hope the campaign to restore Pluto as a planet is successful.

I remember being told this when I was a child, I am pretty sure I cried when I found out. And they talked about Planet-X? All I could think about was wow, we went from cool Greek names to Planet-X? Could we not think of anything more creative?

I was very sad when they demoted Pluto. It would be like if they kicked z out of the alphabet. Something that's been a fact I've known since childhood suddenly becomes untrue. I'd be thrilled if it gets renamed a planet.

I think they should bring back Pluto. No wonder parents can't help their kids with homeowrk anymore. The way they decide to change things after it was drilled in our heads...geez...wonder it 2 + 2 will always equal 4 or if that will change as well.

I suppose different things have varying degrees of importance for different people. I find that it's not really up to me to judge.

I remember when that happened about them dumping Pluto. That was crappy. They should not have done that. Just add a new one, but don't dump the oldies. THat'd be like dumping Hawaii as a State of America cause it was re-measured and found to be to far from the continent coastal line. I don't know why people have to do things like this... don't they have anything better to do with their time? Why do these kinds of people always have to take away what is already there... why don't they just add to the goodness of things?

You won´t believe me, but I learned about that yesterday and was SHOCKED!!! My youngest grandson was singing a song thewy taught him at school about the planets. First verse were the 4 nearest the sun. The second were 4 more. And the the stupid song ended with asteroids. I yelled. How about Pluto? I felt they were not teaching my child the right thing. My son in law told me then about Pluto not being a planet anymore. I do not like it. I don´t know in what grounds they did it, but this Saturday I´m having a birthday party at an astronomer´s home. I´ll ask him or tell him that he must come to dinner to explain if he has to attend to his guests at the party.Promise

Hi There, In my childhood days i have byheart all the planets in this universe. As per you are saying that pluto is no more a planet i am disappointed with this news. Many of our childrens have learned in their school days about planets in this universe. It is really shamefull for all the scientist of this world.

Yes, it is disappointing to learn that what you once knew to be true is actually not (or at least according to a handful of men)

I know, thats just mad, isn't it? Like they can take our childhoods and rearrange our universe....are they going to announce that the world really IS flat?! Actually it kind of gives you some idea what people who truly believed that, and then were told differently, felt like...lol Is nothing true?! Although I have to admit, as a huge Doctor Who fan (British sci fi tv) places like Gallifrey, Mondas, Raxicoricofallupatorious and the Boeshane Peninsula are every bit as real to me as Pluto....:0)

I'm not that upset by it. The only problem with the demotion is that I am often confused and forget that it isn't a planet.

At first, I was naturally sad to learn this, but I thought, hey, those folks (whoever they were) knew what they were doing, so what else is there to do but accept the change. However, since hearing about the argument coming from those who oppose the decision, I've felt hopeful, lol. I really need to read up on this more though.
