Last weekend I took an over night train to my home. I had a very difficult time using the train restroom. It was not clean. Usually, I try my level best not to use public restrooms and I had infection once. The situation of bus station and train station restrooms, government hospitals, education institutions, etc. are not that better.

Hi daliaj
Same here in my country! It's not clean (well, it's dirty, honestly!) Once I can't hold anymore and I went to public toilet. After I open the door, I immediately cancel my decision to use that toilet! Really, better I hold it until go home or visit nearest restaurant! In private place, private school or buildings, mall, etc, the restrooms are really clean,, really on the contrary with restroom in public place and station restroom. So, better if you visit restaurant, order tea or other cheap menu and go to the toilet in that restaurant. Just for comparison, we need to pay Rp1000 = $0.1 after using public toilet (the dirty one) and we need to pat Rp 500 - Rp 2000 = $0.05-$0.25 for a glass of sweet ice tea in restaurant.
Really? So you've ever had infection once? What kind of infection? May I know? So I can more aware about using public toilets

Sorry for my late comment. I had an infection a few months ago. It was my period time and I was travelling in an overnight train. I knew the situation of train restrooms and I didn't go there. I used the same pad (napkin) for a long time, till I reach my home and removed it. Using the blooded pad for a long time got an infection to me. I got small swellings....itchy wounds...something look like bug bites, with a bad smell liquid coming out of it. After that I make sure to remove pads on time.

I don't have too much flow most of the times (other than the first day). So, I use it for eight hours usually. The day I got infection; I used it for around fourteen hours. I know that it is too long. I was hoping to reach home soon iin 10 hours, but the train got delayed and some other issues came up. Thanks for the comment. Happy mylotting.

Hi daliaj
Oh so you mean that infection.. sorry to hear that and hope it won't happen again. But it's a difficult choice, use the same pad or go to the dirty restroom and change it. How long actually you didn't change it? In my experience, I had used the same pad for 8 hours and that's fine.. guess you use it more that 8 hours?

some are good but most of them are not. In small stores or mall or gasoline stations, they have attendant to maintain it otherwise, its so frustrating to go inside and find out how dirty public toilets are.

At many places in my country, I have seen people in charge of the restrooms to collect money and clean it. But, those toilets are not clean. They collect a small amount of money for using the toilet, but they don't keep it clean. Also, the people who use the restroom don't care about the cleanliness of it. I think the attendant should pay us for being in the toilet for those few minutes. Thanks for the response.

daliaj most of the places I visit here in the united States have very clean well maIntained rest rooms and I feel very safe using them. Our
hospitals restrooms are very clean and well maintained as well. The only places i have seen that are diry and unacceptable are some of the service station rest rooms. But the bigger company restrooms are very clean and you must ask for the key to the restroom that helps to keep them clean.

That is great. I also heard that most of the restrooms in United States are very clean. Restrooms in hotels are free to use in my country. When my husband wanted to use a hotel restroom in Rome, they asked for the bill of the food they had from the hotel. They allow people to use the restroom only if the had food from the hotel. Thanks for the response.

For the most part, public restrooms are pretty clean here. I do my best not to use the portable ones because the smell just makes me feel like they are dirty. Sometimes the gas station bathrooms are a bit questionable, but the only time I'm tempted to use these is when I'm on a road trip and that isn't very often. I would maybe be a little more leary if I had an infection or a bad experience, but so far, I have been okay.

It is clever to avoid using them, but we can't control using them soemtimes. People should be educated to leave the restrooms clean even if they use them. I wonder whether there are people who are supposed to clean public toilets on time. I try my level best not to use them. Thansk for the response.

It is very difficult to use a diry restroom, but sometimes we can't help. We will be forced use it if we are in emergency. I had gone thorugh those kind of situations especially when I travelled. Everybody should be careful enough to leave the restroom clean when the leave the place. Thanks for the restroom.

It is dangerous to use those toilet. You will get some spreding diseases, but sometiems we can't stop using them. I don't understand how people can be careless to the extent of just using public toilet and leaving it without even flushing. Do they do that with their home toilet? Thanks for the response.

Hi daliaj!
Public toilets here in our city are not as clean. I believe that is true to most of the public toilets here in our country are not clean. That is one of the reasons why I take precautions when using them. If I could go off without having to use these public toilets, then I won't use any of these public toilets.

From the above responses I can see the situation is not better in any country. Some says there are some ok restrooms and some bad restrooms. I can say that I have never seen a very clean public restroom in my life. I don't think I will see that in the near future too. It is sad.

Yes daliaj!Rest rooms in our country are not maintained properly. And our fellow countrymen are not having the basic knowledge of using one. They don't even mind flushing the toilet after use.I wonder how they keep the toilets at their home.Even some toilets which are maintained by the private are also not neat.It is a shame for us.

Yes, it is very shame. You feel bad when yuo travel to some other country and see how well public toilets are maintained there. I don't understand how our people neglect the fact that people like him/her are using the same place again. I don't expect them to clean a public place, but atleast they can make sure that they are not dirtying it.

I really hates to get in dirty restroom. But i can avoid not using it when i was going out. Well, here in my country some of the restroom condition is bad and some of it is okay.I avoid the dirty one and try the cleanest restroom as possible.

The horrible part is we need to get inside the restroom to see whether it is clean or not. It is painful to see a dirty restroom. In my coutnry, you can see a person who sits out of the restroom block. He is the one incharge of collecting money for using the restroom, but he doesn't take the responsibility of cleaning it. Thanks for the response.

I had this infection once and since that day I promised to myself that I will try even in hard times not to go there, in the city here, it is horrible to see the toilets because it is very and extremely dirty so I prefer to help myself in the office itself before going to take the bus.

I am sorry to hear that you also had the infection once. I got the infection because I didn't remove the pad for a long time because I felt too much to take the risk of going to a train restroom. I took around a week for me to come out of it using ointments. Thanks for the response.

Hi daliaj!
We are residing abroad and the best thing that amaze me here is the cleanliness of the toilet, utility lady will always follow each cubicle user upon going out, wipes the toilet seat and mops the floor before any other user gets in. Tissues, soaps and hand dryers are being provided. Moreso, in some restrooms from the malls you can even sleep on the aisles as there are sofa sets provided. Yes, Dubai is known for it's cleanliness......Good Day!

That is a new information for me. I didn't know that Dubai is a very clean city. It is really lucky to live in a very clean and less polluted city. Everybody would have visted a public toilet at least once in their life. We can't completely ignore the importance of having clean public toilets. Thanks for the response.

Its pathetic in my place too. Its hard to find a clean toilet. I really wonder if people have no civic sense and they do not teach their kids to use toilets. I have roamed around a lot in my country and no where I have found clean public toilets. What irks me most is the men urrinating on the sides of the road I really feel like kicking them on their behind and ask if they have ever seen a toilet. Though Sulabh seva had started but it alos fizzeled out after a while due to people not taking it too seriously. Even they have turned dirty over a period of time.

In my experience, public restrooms here in Texas have all been reasonably clean or very clean. My primary physician is located at one of our military hospitals. The restrooms there are always very clean. I have not traveled by bus or train in many years, but the restrooms at the airports have been very clean. Even the restrooms at the rest stops along the highway have been reasonably clean. The only dirty restrooms that I have seen have been at service stations.

Quite worst is the situation of public toilets in my country and especially in railways, its too worst. The sanitation is quite worst and there is absolutely no hygiene that prevails.

I only use the public restroom at places that I know keep them clean. I will not use one in the park because those are just gross but most of the businesses where I live try to keep the restroom as clean as possible. Sometimes I come across a gross one and just tell the manager of the place I am at and they will send an employee in to clean it up.

Hey daliaj I would never use a pulic toilet if I can help it. If of course you just have to go, roll up your pants and try not to sit on the seat. Unfortunately many people do not know or just don't care enough to use a toilet properly. then of course, those public toilets should be well maintained as well and cleaned regularly and have attendants to check on them etc. When it comes to public toilets in bus stands, well, I would rather not say anything at all.

My place here, if it is not a hotel restroom, or a good shopping mall restroom i don't think i will go. The other public toilet is just watery, dirty and so disgusting, unless if i really really cannot hold it anymore, than I'll go.
